5-Star Dim Sum @ Mei Ling Street – A Variety of Pocket-Friendly Dim Sum by Former Hotel Dim Sum Chef
December 14, 2021
Some of you might have heard of the second outlet opening of 5-Star Dim Sum at Rivervale Mall in Sengkang, which is fairly recent given that its OG outlet on Mei Ling Street only just opened early this year in February. That prompted me to head down to visit their first stall, where it all began, to treat myself to their wide range of affordable dim sum.
The Hong Kong-style dim sum stall was started up by Chef Yiu Wah Tai, who has over 30 years of culinary experience making dim sum in established restaurants such as Jiang-Nan Chun at Four Seasons Hotel and Shang Palace Restaurant at Shangri-La Hotel.
Everything on the menu is made by hand daily and you’ll find a number of steamed and baked goods such as Fresh Prawn Ha Gow ($4.50 for four pieces), Char Siew Roasted Bun ($2.30 for one piece) chee cheong fun, noodles and porridge. With such an extensive array of options, there’s only one thing to do — ask the staff for recommendations!
Among their fried items, the Salad Prawn Dumplings ($4) is one of the more popular choices. Freshly fried upon ordering, each one was well-stuffed with crunchy prawns coated in a slightly tangy and sweet dressing. It fared well enough on its own, but there’s nothing like dipping a crispy fried dumpling into mayo.
Another dumpling to go for is their Spicy Dumplings ($3.50 for four pieces). Doused in a mix of chilli oil and vinegar, the plump, juicy dumplings had a savoury-sweet stuffing of meat and veggies that gelled superbly well with the tingling spiciness of the sauce
While I’m not too much of an egg tart fan in general, I absolutely loved their mini Egg Tarts ($3.50 for three pieces). These bite-sized treats had a crumbly, buttery crust that melted in my mouth and the smooth custard filling was fairly creamy and not too sweet.
Instead of the usual Hong Kong-style chee cheong fun stuffed with prawns or char siew, I was recommended the Prawn Roll Chee Cheong Fun ($5). Silky rice sheets were wrapped around a crispy prawn roll with a prawn-and-veggie filling slathered with a slightly thick sweet sauce, then further drizzled with a light, savoury sauce.
While I enjoyed the satisfyingly hearty crunch from the prawn roll, I wished there was more of the lighter sauce to go around for the rice sheets to absorb more of.
There’s nothing like affordable restaurant-grade dim sum that will keep the steady stream of customers coming back. And with the sheer number of items they have on their menu, a return trip beckons!
