929 Desserts & Bites – Ex-Aesthetician Sells Tasty Fusion Korean-Taiwanese Bingsu From $4.90 in a Tampines Coffee Shop
December 10, 2021
It’s finally the end of the year! While our sunny island doesn’t see much of a cool, wintery weather, you can still get a taste of that chilly feeling at this fusion Korean-Taiwanese Bingsu stall!
929 Desserts & Bites is located in a coffee shop that’s five minutes away from Tampines West MRT. The same coffee shop also houses the famous Mr Wong Seremban Beef Noodle!
Run by owner Pauline (right in picture), and her childhood friend, and sister Adeline, the stall which opened at the end of July this year serves fusion Bingsu with creative toppings.
Pauline used to work as an aesthetician and was in the beauty business for a decade. However, she wanted to carve a name for herself, which led her to pivot to the F&B industry. She initially thought of selling hot foods such as burgers but after seeing a Bingsu shop in Orchard, she was inspired and decided to create her own renditions of the well-loved dessert.
Pauline then roped Adeline into setting up shop in Tampines. The latter used to work in the F&B industry and came out of her retirement to aid Pauline.
As it was the duo’s first time making Bingsu, they learned the craft through Youtube videos and numerous rounds of experimenting with toppings.
Pauline cheerily explained that their shaved ice is the same as Taiwanese shaved ice. What’s special is that the stall uses flavoured ice blocks to enhance the richness of flavour. While most of their ingredients are purchased from suppliers, the team makes their own taro cube toppings featured in Green Monster, one of their more popular choices. They also have fun and refreshing toppings like cocoa cereal and frozen fruits.
After battling with the unfaltering heat, I was excited to tuck in!
It’s matcha galore with the popular Green Monster ($7.90), which featured matcha-flavoured shaved ice topped with taro cubes, matcha mochi, matcha ice cream and red beans, and a dusting of matcha powder. The milky ice sheets melted in my mouth instantly, and I was glad that the mocha wasn’t too sweet. The red bean was chewy and tender, and complemented the subtle bitter hints of matcha well.
Next, I tried Halo Halo ($4.90), which sees vanilla-flavoured shaved ice topped with cocoa cereal and mini Oreos. This Bingsu’s cookies-and-cream combination is a fan favourite amongst children. The subtle vanilla flavour went well with the chocolatey crunch of the cereal and Oreos.
If you’re looking for a refreshing treat, give the tangy Gold Fantasy ($6.90) a try! Expect mango-flavoured shaved ice topped with tiny balls of mango bursts, frozen mango cubes, and a scoop of mango ice cream. The mango bursts were almost like ikura, exploding with mango juices in every bite. I found the Bingsu to be much sweeter than the other two, but fans of mango might find it just nice.
While these aren’t your traditional Korean Bingsu, the generous toppings and creamy shaved ice are wallet-friendly and might keep you coming back for more! The stall also offers a special glutinous rice which is handmade by Adeline. It is only available on Friday and Saturday and is said to be a huge hit. Why not pop by and try them all!
