APSN Mystical Café for All – Providing Special-Needs Trainees with Skills
March 21, 2017
The Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) has recently launched its first social enterprise – the Mystical Café for All. This café is established with the aim to provide trainees with special needs an avenue to gain exposure, and equip them with skills.
We visited the cafe for lunch one afternoon. The café is run by 5 ASPN trainees and an instructor. Though the menu is limited at the moment, offering only 2 mains, with a selection of sides and an assortment of cakes, tarts and beverages, the prices are very attractive, with each item priced below $7. According to the instructor, they are still working on increasing the number of food items at the café, as soon as the ASPN trainees are ready.
Mains are served from 11am to 3pm. We had Grains of Singapura ($5) which is basically Nasi Lemak, as well as Spaghetti Ala Melayu ($4), a mee rebus inspired pasta dish. You can choose either fish or chicken to go with your Nasi Lemak, and it is accompanied by a glorious sunny side up egg, ikan billis, and peanuts. Don’t forget the chilli too!
The Mee Rebus Spaghetti is an interesting creation. Little cubes of tofu, slices of capsicum, and cherry tomatoes gave each bite different textures and flavours. The dish also consists of a hard-boiled egg. The sauce isn’t very spicy, nor too thick unlike the usual mee rebus.
There are cakes ranging from Chocolate Chiffon cake, to New York Cheese cake, and others to complete your meal on a sweet note. The Lemon Meringue ($5) is refreshing and zesty. An ideal afternoon snack if you’re feeling a tad sleepy. It’s quite light too, so one can easily finish it.
APSN Mystical Café for All has a Pay-It-Forward initiative for patrons to buy a meal voucher for others, and the profits will be used to sustain the café. Let’s all play a part in creating a caring society!
