You’ve probably seen the cyan walls of this beautiful cafe, and its aesthetically pleasing desserts, somewhere on Instagram. Hailing from Osaka, Japan, Asian Rad Afters is a specialty cafe serving jazzed up Bubble Waffle desserts ($12++), iced Asian teas ($4.80), ice cream fruit cups ($8.50), and regular scooped ice cream ($4.50++). They’re also working on frozen fruit smoothies with cheese foam(coming soon)!

I’m sure many of us would agree that a sizeable number of cafes and their food look amazing on camera, but turn out to be slightly disappointing. I came by to see whether this place was going to be just another pretty space for the ‘gram. Turns out, it is pretty rad!

On top of their regular menu, they also have two locally-inspired flavours — Peranakan Road ($12.50), and Little SouQ ($13). The Peranakan Road sees Coconut Ice Cream, Purple Sweet Potato Fresh Cream, Fresh Mango and Dragonfruit, fruit loops, and mint leaves wrapped up in their original waffle. Little SouQ was a more indulgent treat comprising Thai Milk Tea Ice Cream, Cheese Cream, Dried Fig, Coconut Flakes, Dates, Pumpkin Seeds, Candied Almonds and a Pretzel.

Each waffle is cooked upon order, and meticulously constructed to resemble the photos exactly. They’re really committed to maintaining the picture-perfect look, and I liked that the treats come in a beautifully-designed paper cone. It even had a plastic wrapper to prevent your hands from getting sticky when the ice cream melts! Pretty and practical! But enough about the aesthetics, what about the taste?

The coconut ice cream, with bits of nata de coco, was refreshing, albeit a little icy. Thankfully, the Sweet Potato cream they added on top was delightful! It was slightly sticky like a marshmallow, and tasted like a cross between sweet potato and taro. The fruits were also very fresh, and the mango provided a nice burst of sweetness and tartness. I recommend getting a bite with some fruit loops for some contrast in texture.

If the Peranakan Road was a sweet pleasant child, the Little SouQ would be like its darker, more mischievous cousin. The Little SouQ comes with a cacao waffle, and was also less sweet, which I liked. This was a good move as all the other components in the waffle felt heavier than the Peranakan’s. Like the coconut, the Thai ice cream was a little icy, and the Thai tea flavour wasn’t too pronounced.

What I liked to do was to get a little bit of everything in my spork and take a big bite! Don’t forget to get some of the yummy cheese cream in too! When you’re done with the top portion, there’s a little Kaya at the bottom for you to pair with the rest of the waffle. Normally there’s custard, but because we’re in Singapore, they decided to replace it with Kaya!

Although it’s a little pricey, I’d say it’s something you can share with another friend so it ends up being pretty alright! If you visit, do let us know which flavour you enjoy! If I could get the Peranakan Road toppings in the cacao waffle, I would be ecstatic.
