Breakfast Grill – Delicious Thick All-Day Sandwiches (One Has Cheetos!) Along East Coast Road
March 05, 2022
We’ll always have love for Instagrammable food like brunch, desserts and thick sandwiches. I especially love thick sandwiches, especially when they come jam-packed with a bounty of ingredients. The new Breakfast Grill is gaining fast approval, and it’s not surprising at all.
Having first started out as an online store, Breakfast Grill has converted to a brick-and-mortar store along East Coast Road, earning the east another point in the long-running debate of which side of Singapore is the best. While seating is all in one space, the shift in lighting and decor over the tables towards the front and back of the eatery was like night and day.
While the seats closer towards the open front counter have a clean, minimalist look to them, the ones tucked towards the back saw rattan chairs bathed in a warm accent lighting, and surrounded by industrial-chic walls.
There are a total of eight different all-day sammies to choose from. They include the elevated egg mayo-inspired Sunday Cals ($12), American-style Chicky ($14) and the beef-forward Cali ($14). Pair them with light bites like Truffle Fries ($10) and Spam Fries ($10), or check out their other offerings which include Tomato Soup ($4), Greek Yoghurt Custard Pudding ($8) and Chorizo Pasta ($15).
To round off your meal, go for their coffee ($3.50-$5.50), tea ($5 for hot, $5.50 for iced) or shakes ($10).
There’s nothing more classic than a grilled cheese, and Breakfast Grill’s Cheeses ($10) was one of the best I’ve had. While it doesn’t look as impressive as the other thick sandwiches, this simple combination of three different types of cheese between toasted slices of brioche was made even more moreish with the addition of their house-made garlic spread and chilli flakes.
I mean, just look at that cheese pull! You might want to quickly chow down on it after getting that desired Instagram story. But even after it has turned cold (job hazard of shooting first and eating later), I can attest that the flavours were still on point.
I’m usually one who favours meat over veggie options, but the Magic Mushroom ($14.50) made me a convert from the very first bite. The juicy baked portobello with mozzarella coupled with the creamed spinach was an absolute indulgence while still identifying as a healthier option. There wasn’t much of a crunch from the fried enoki strings, but it added more bite to the entire sandwich.
For a combination of deliciously complex flavours, the Hot Chick ($15.50) will leave you feeling full and 100% satisfied. Firstly, the five-spiced deep-fried chicken thigh was amazingly tender on the inside and the tinge of spice was evened out by the scrambled eggs.
Enter another hit of spice from the jalapeno peppers and a curious crunch from a sprinkling of cheesy jalapeno Cheetos, once again balanced out by their house-made garlic aioli. Take a huge bite of it with the slightly sweet, toasted brioche and this will be one sandwich you won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
Superb food and a relaxing ambiance, Breakfast Grill is definitely one of the most ideal spots for breakfast and lunch in the east. Will I travel for an hour to get there just to snag one of their sandwiches? Anything for Breakfast Grill.
