Burnt Cones – Unique Gelato, Fluffy Waffles & Good Coffee All Day
February 04, 2021
Chaoda (burnt) cones? Yup. Burnt cones are literally served here! Burnt Cones is one of the new food establishments that popped up in Sunset Way towards the end of 2020. Serving extra creamy gelato, waffles, brunch, and coffee, Burnt Cones sports a minimalist look with grey walls and seems like a cool hangout spot.
We noticed that the gelato freezer had tags with the names of the flavours in English, Mandarin and Japanese! I was really curious as to why this is the case. Turns out, it was translated to these languages to cater to the Japanese community in the area, and perhaps the elderly in the neighbourhood too. It was nice to hear this as it shows that they know and care for their customers.
For starters, we had a single scoop of the Signature Pistachio ($6) on the burnt cone (+$1). I was only expecting to have the burnt version of the handmade cones here. However, we were given the option of the type of cone that we want. Termed as The Trio, the handmade cones come in three variations – Regular, Slightly Burnt and Burnt.
So the story goes, the burnt cones were developed during their R&D process where they (kind-of) accidentally “cooked” the cones longer than expected. Upon tasting it, they realised that burnt cones don’t taste too bad. In fact, there is a group who would prefer to have a bittersweet taste from the cones as a contrast to the sweet gelato. Hence, The Trio.
The pistachio gelato was one with a strong nutty fragrance, that could almost trick your mind into thinking that you’re actually eating the real nut. The gelato was milky and thick, yet smooth and not too sweet. It was not too overpowering as well. I could see why it’s their signature. What’s more, the gelato here is 97% fat-free! If you’re craving for ice cream while on a diet, you know where to go!
On top of that, we also had a Premium Double Scoop ($9) on Waffles (+$6). The two flavours we got are Ube and Strawberry Basil, which is one of their two sorbet flavours.
The waffles took some time to come as it is made upon order. It came hot, and was very fluffy! The exterior was crispy, and the inside was soft and pleasant. It had a good density and consistency for waffles. The scoops were larger than what other cafes serve, making a good ratio of waffles to ice cream.
The Ube, also known as purple flesh yam, was sweeter than expected. It had a strong and almost overpowering taste, but I think that it’s just how ube is. It had a good consistency just like the pistachio gelato. When paired with the waffles, the strong flavours of the gelato were balanced out.
As for the Strawberry Basil, it was my favourite out of the three flavours that we got. It was light and had a tropical vibe to it. It was not too sweet, and the amount of basil added was just right as it melded well with the fruity strawberry flavour. Would recommend having this refreshing treat especially on a sunny day.
Burnt Cones serves speciality coffee by Concrete Ground and Glyph Supply Co. I guess you west-siders don’t have to go too far to get a good coffee fix now! Was really impressed by the White ($5) that we had. We were looking forward to the Marrakesh Mint Tea ($5) which turned out to be from Gryphon. Was a little disappointed, but it’s all right, now we know.
All in all, Burnt Cones has a good concept going on. I might come back someday to try the brunch menu.
