When I was young, there used to be a hawker stall near my place which sells very yummy fishball noodles. My grandfather used to bring me there for breakfast and I would order a bowl of $2 fishball yellow noodles with ketchup. Unfortunately, the old couple managing the stall decided to retire not long after. I can’t remember exactly what I like about that stall but I can still clearly remember the taste of the noodles and soup.
Just last week, when I went for lunch with my colleague at Lor 7 Toa Payoh Food & Market Centre, we were seated right in front of Chao Zhou Fishball Noodle and it caught my eyes. Because while I was waiting for colleague who was queuing for beef noodles for a good 30 minutes, the queue at Chao Zhou Fishball Noodle is neverending. Seriously.
When colleague came back with his bowl of beef noodles, he asked if I wanted to try Chao Zhou Fishball Noodle. I pondered a while and was thinking in my mind if the long queue was due to slow service. But before I knew it, he was already queuing for it.
So after another 30 minutes of queuing, I finally get a bowl of fishball noodles and it tasted similar to the one I had when I was a kid! 童年的回忆… Frankly speaking, I am not a fan of fishball noodles initially. But lately, after visiting places like Ru Ji Kitchen, Xin Lu Fishball Noodles and Song Kee Fishball Noodles, I began to appreciate a good bowl of fishball noodles. Just yesterday night, I started to crave for Chao Zhou Fishball Noodle so I decided I must blog about it today!
Chao Zhou Fishball Noodle started in 1968 and is managed by a old couple. It only opens for FOUR days (which hawker stall can do that?). Their noodles are very springy with a good proportion of chilli and ketchup sauce which gives the noodles a well balanced flavour of sweet and savoury.
Most importantly, for $2.50 you get not one, not two but 5 golf ball size fishballs. These fishballs tasted very fresh and it was bouncy and juicy. And did I tell you, I really love their pork lard!
