Chop Kin Mee – Boat Noodles & Tom Yum Seafood Noodles in Punggol
February 26, 2022
With so many different cuisines available in Singapore, it’s always hard to decide what to have for dinner. However, an undeniable favourite among many of us has to be Thai food! And if you’re a fan, you might be pleased to know about Chop Kin Mee — the latest addition to Punggol. The menu here comprises classic Thai dishes such as tom yum soup and boat noodles.
The stall is run by the same folks behind Victory Boat Noodles at Beauty World, and offers a number of mains such as Pork Boat Noodles ($5), Tom Yum Minced Pork Noodles ($5) and Braised Pork Rice ($6). There are also side dishes like Thai Spring Roll ($4 for three pieces), Thai Fish Cake ($5) and even Mango Sticky Rice ($6) for dessert.
Striking that ideal balance of sour and spicy flavours in a dish is not an easy task, and while Chop Kin Mee’s Tom Yum Seafood Noodles ($7) didn’t quite achieve that in terms of heat, the tangy broth was appetising, and had a slightly spicy tinge that was thoroughly infused into the chewy rice noodles.
The prawns were very springy and fresh. The cuttlefish was fairly chewy and could be a tad tough to chew through. I did enjoy the unconventional addition of an onsen egg in the tom yum soup!
There was a strong herbaceous scent in the Beef Boat Noodles ($6) which came through strongly as I was sipping the slightly thick broth. I felt that the broth could have used a little more seasoning. The dish comes with the same QQ rice noodles as the Tom Yum Seafood Noodles but you can also choose to customise your bowl with kway teow, bee hoon or Thai mama noodles as well!
The boat noodles come with a mix of beef balls and beef slices. The beef balls were very beefy and had a nice, firm bite; its flavours can be a bit too much for those who don’t typically enjoy very strong beefy flavours. Personally, it was enjoyable and even more so when dipped into the chilli on the side. The beef slices were also very tender, though there wasn’t much marination involved. Just keep an eye out for soft bones!
Unfortunately, the Basil Pork Rice ($5) fell short of expectations as well. There wasn’t any spiciness detected and the fragrance from the basil couldn’t be found either. The minced pork was also very sweet and fried in dark soy sauce, resulting in an aftertaste similar to what you would get if you eat black carrot cake.
Overall, Chop Kin Mee might cater more to those who aren’t fans of spicy foods. Do share your thoughts with us if you happen to give them a go!
