Chu and Co – Dual Concept Cafe & Gelato Lab with Fresh Bakes Daily
March 07, 2021
It has always been my dream to go to a cafe that has a full-on alfresco seating area because I just love the natural wind and I always enjoyed being in the sun. I was really elated when I found out about Chu and Co. The space consists of a whole “backyard garden” made up of an elevated concrete platform that’s lined with furniture. They also have an indoor dining area with just a high table. The whole tropical theme with pots of plants hanging around makes the whole place look super chill yet homey. It is the perfect spot to spend a whole afternoon over a cuppa and delicious pastries, or a great stop for your morning coffee fix!
Another plus point for this hidden gem would be its pet-friendly outdoor area, which is not easy to find in Singapore. Many who were walking their dogs also came by for coffee, and so did their #1 fan, Bailey the Shiba! Other than Bailey, I also saw a few cute doggos! The cafe is frequented by the residents in the area, with many regulars coming by after their morning walk or their F45 workout.
Chu and Co is a humble team led by Rui and Ling, who are dedicated to bringing you only the freshest loaves of bread and pastries daily. Everything on the pastry rack is baked in-house on a daily basis, with the team coming in as early as 5:30 am to prepare and bake everything! Onboard with them is also Rapahaelle, the owner of Chickpea and Berries, churning out gluten-free and vegan bakes such as Chia Pudding ($9) and Dark Chocolate Brownies ($5.50).
We got the Breakfast Brioche ($9), Avocado Tartine ($13), Regular White ($5), Cold Brew White ($6.50) and the House Cold Brew Tea – Earl Grey Lavender infused with Rose Petals ($5.50).
The only reason why I chose the Breakfast Brioche was that I was enticed by the bacon that was hanging out and that perfect bright yellow scrambled egg that is nicely folded and tucked in between the bun. And also it was the last piece on the rack, so it must have been pretty good to be sold out within 30 minutes of the cafe’s opening.
Not only did it looked good, but it also tasted really good too. The fluffy sourdough buns had the right density, with chives mayo and mixed greens sandwiched between. The scrambled eggs were firm and soft and very well seasoned. The highlight, in my opinion, was the bacon strip. It wasn’t too salty or tough, and it had a light crunch to it which added some texture to the brioche, which is primarily soft. I would say that it’s a perfect breakfast bun for me.
The other main that I had was the Avocado Tartine. It’s one of the regular mains on the menu, and sees smashed avocado with marinated tomatoes served on two slices of sourdough. Once again, it looked so darn good with the vibrant colours.
The toast is drizzled with balsamic vinegar, which adds a slight acidic kick which went hand in hand with the tanginess of the tomatoes. The smashed avocado was very smooth, with chunks of avocado in it. The sourdough pieces were a genius complement! They weren’t too tough like how you might expect the edges of some sourdough bread to be, and you could tell that they really don’t sell stale bread here.
The coffee here was rather strong, for both the cold brew and white coffee. It might have been a little too strong for me and my friends. Perhaps the mini portion of coffee ($4, 4oz) would have been just right for us, instead of the regular ($5, 7oz) cup that we had. According to Rui, their coffee beans are from PPP Coffee for now, which might or might not change in the near future as they continue to refine details on this part of the bakery with their new barista coming in. I will be keeping tabs on how their coffee might evolve during my next visit, hopefully when the Gelato Lab is opened too!
The cafe offers a few unique blends of tea. We had the Earl Grey House Cold Brew Tea, which was one of the two available that day. It was refreshing, with hints of of lavender and rose. If you prefer tea, be sure to check out their house brews when you’re here!
After finishing our food, we still had some stomach space, hence we got the Spelt Chocolate Walnut Banana Bread ($5) and the Sourdough Cinnamon Roll ($5) to share. They were just as good and didn’t disappoint us! The Spelt Chocolate Walnut Banana Bread was very, very dense and moist. The chocolate was not too sweet as I think they might have used dark chocolate for this as the aftertaste was quite bitter.
The Sourdough Cinnamon Roll on the other hand was very enjoyable and surprisingly good! The usual cinnamon roll that you might be familiar with is always soft and chewy, but this version sits on the other end of the spectrum. It was slightly tougher and it was slightly crispy on the edges too. If you’re looking for a special pastry to try, do check it out!
Being a dual concept cafe, Chu and Co is a bakery by day and Chulato, a gelato lab by night. They’re working on some finishing touches before their launch and I am very excited to see what they have to offer for their gelato lab! Do follow their IG page @chuand.co for the latest updates!
