Located at 22 Martin Road, Common Man Coffee Roasters is a good place (but a more pricey one) for breakfast before work. It is a unique new concept that’s brewed from a partnership between Harry Grover, Five Senses Coffee (Australia), and the Spa Esprit Group. No wonder the cafe has been creating waves on the coffee scene.

The decor has a Aussie feel with the bar decorated with aeropress, drip filters and synesso. Using beans from Australian specialist roaster Five Senses Coffee, they make great coffee here which makes me miss Melbourne so much. I took up my barista training at Australian Barista Academy which is run my Five Sense Coffee. So the coffee brings back so much memories for me.

Completing the equation is a menu of scrumptious bistro-quality nosh. Organic Eggs Benedict ($24) came with two poached eggs on top of tender braised ox cheeks and lightly toasted artisanal sourdough toast. I enjoyed it thoroughly with excellent poached eggs and tender ox cheek, which was something different from the norm. Hollandaise sauce was very creamy and rich. May not work for those who prefer a lighter brunch, but it worked for me.

I ended the meal with churros and chocolate dip ($12). Common Man’s version is quite doughy and light in taste. So you really need the chocolate dip to perk up a bit. Maybe I should try the french toast next time, it looks more tasty.

I reached at about 10am on a Monday and there was only a few tables filled. I went in to find a seat but it was pretty cold so I decided to sit outside the cafe. However, no one came to take my order so I went to the cashier and placed my order. Unfortunately, the cashier was really not attentive, having me to repeat my order thrice. Told the waiter that I am dining at the outdoor area but my coffee came in paper cup because they thought I wanted to do a takeaway. Thankfully, they managed to change my order status and have the other dishes served in the usual dining plates.

Will definitely be back for their coffee, even though their service may not be top notch. I love their cafe space, the high ceiling makes it very spacious.
