Whenever I head over to Johor Bahru, my friends never fail to ask me, “What’s for breakfast?” It’s always a tricky question, especially since I’ve already featured a number of excellent stalls near the JB checkpoint in a previous article (check it out here), and now their expectations are higher than ever. This time, I decided to shake things up and take my friends to Dapo Khaleeda, a hidden gem that serves a standout version of roti canai — the Roti Canai Sarang Burung.

Dapo Khaleeda opens early at 7:30 AM and operates until they sell out! Their specialty, the Sarang Burung, is not your ordinary roti canai. Each order starts with freshly-made dough that’s pan-fried to a crispy perfection on their massive iron flat-top grill. Two perfectly fried sunny-side-ups are added on top, making it resemble a “bird’s nest.” And, the result? A crisp, golden brown roti with soft, fluffy layers and gooey eggs in the centre.

For just RM6, you can enjoy this dish in its simplest form — plain — which allows the flavors of the roti and eggs to shine. The roti canai itself is a highlight. The texture is spot-on — not too greasy, and it holds up well even when paired with the eggs or toppings. The buttery richness of the roti complements the eggs, making it a satisfying combination.

If you’re craving something heartier, try their rendang, sardine, or satay options, each priced at RM13. The beef rendang option, in particular with its tender, melt-in-your-mouth beef and rich, flavourful sauce, has garnered rave reviews, The sardines, on the other hand, bring a tangy, savoury element to the dish.

Dapo Khaleeda isn’t just about roti canai. They also offer a DIY nasi lemak station, allowing you to customize your plate with your favorite toppings such as fried chicken, sambal, ikan bilis (fried anchovies), and hard-boiled eggs. This makes for an exciting, personalized meal that you can tailor to your taste. They also have satay!

If you’re visiting in the morning, you can wash down your meal with classic drinks such as hot/iced Milo, or their standout teh halia. Isn’t this just quite the perfect way to start your day in Johor Bahru? Do note that Dapo Khaleeda tends to be generous with their sugar, so if you prefer your drinks to be less sweet, be sure to inform them when ordering.

The bustling, lively atmosphere at Dapo Khaleeda is as much a part of the experience as the food. So the next time you’re in JB, make sure to swing by Dapo Khaleeda early in the morning, and get ready to dig into a great breakfast.
