Don Signature Crab – Delicious Crab Beehoon in Toa Payoh for $25
May 11, 2017
Don Signature Crab is now known as Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab and has moved to 39 Tyrwhitt Road.
Don is well-known for his pie and Crab Beehoon Soup at the former China Square Central. He has relocated to Toa Payoh, focusing on serving premium quality crab and prawn dishes at UNBELIEVABLE PRICES. (Note: Don has sold his pie/pastry business in Nov 2015. He has no more dealings with his pie/pastry since then.)
Together with three friends, we met for dinner on a Monday night. I am surprised to see the whole coffee shop filled with crab fans who came here just for the crabs!
Don’s three signature crab dishes include Crab Beehoon Soup, Black Pepper Crab and Chilli Crab, and prices are fixed at $25, $30 and $40 – $55 for small, medium and large whole crabs.
The crab bee hoon soup was tasty with a good hint of fresh ginger, dang gui and some Chinese cooking wine. I have had crab Beehoon soup in Mellben quite a few times and I must say that Don’s soup is not as flavourful as Mellben’s but definitely less MSG. The soup was good to the last drop, and there was even yam in it!
Each dish can be shared by 2 and no pork nor lard is used in the cooking process. Other crab dishes available include Cheese Crab Beehoon and Laksa Crab Beehoon.
Even though this Black Pepper Crab Bee Hoon looks similar to the Prawns & Lala Bee Hoon, the broth is different. The former has got a stark peppery taste, while this one is sweeter and more garlicky. Each plate had one mid-sized crab, lots of vegetables and a good serving of bee hoon.
To be honest, the black pepper crab bee hoon didn’t appeal to me as the sauce was a little too overpowering. But well, what was important was the crab which was fresh and firm. The crabs were fairly priced at $25 per plate, and the flesh popped out of the shells with ease.
Prawn lovers will love his VALUE FOR MONEY Black Pepper Prawns-Scallops ($15), LaLa Prawn White Beehoon ($15), Prawn-Scallop Laksa ($10) and Prawn Beehoon Soup ($10).
The Prawns & Lala Bee Hoon ($15) had the noodles soaked in thick and garlicky broth, which brings a more balanced flavour than the black pepper crab bee hoon. I like the accompanying sambal belachan. It is spicy and sour, and really kicked things up a notch.
Here, the prices are 50% lower than the prices at some well-known seafood restaurants in Singapore. For the price you pay and the quality of seafood that you receive, I’d say it’s worth it and Don has made crab dishes more affordable to all.
