Dong Po Colonial Cafe – Old School Bakery in Kampong Glam
April 14, 2015
We were exploring Kampong Glam one day and a friend of mine recommended having breakfast at Dong Po Colonial Cafe. Started by Kelvin who is a 4th generation baker, he quit his graphic design job to fulfil his father’s dream of keeping the old family recipes alive. He learnt how to bake from his father, who studied at Le Cordon Bleu and worked as a pastry chef around the world.
The kaya toast is not bad, with a toasted old school bread loaded with slices of butter and kaya. I had a cup of traditional coffee to go with it. Round off breakfast with two soft-boiled eggs and linger over the coffee in this quiet, tranquil part of town. Breakfast set costs $4.50.
What I enjoyed more is Dong Po’s Bostock or French almond toast, which uses bread instead of brioche. It is topped with frangipane, sliced Almonds and dusted with icing sugar. A perfect slice of almond-crusted goodness. It is made to order, so be prepared to wait for a while if the bakery is too crowded. Bostock with teh/kopi costs $3.50. They also have a huge almon macaroon tart ($1.90) if you are a fan of macaron. The almond cake forms the base, covered with crispy and airy meringue. We also have the butter cake which is quite dense.
I love the tranquil atmosphere in this part of the day, when I can enjoy traditional breakfast while chatting with my friends. It is really heartening to see businesses trying to keep the heritage, as well as to discover interesting cafes in different parts of Singapore.
