Eng Kee Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice and Porridge – Their Boiled Chicken is the Real Deal
February 09, 2021
Chicken rice has always been one of my comfort foods. But not just any plate of chicken rice, it has to be Eng Kee’s chicken rice! Eng Kee is one of the few food stalls that I have been patronising since I was a child, and it had tasted just as good throughout the years. I believe this is the reason for their many accolades and 5 chopsticks rating from Makan Sutra in 2011 and 2013.
The stall is manned by three siblings. The sister is in charge of taking orders and preparing items like curry noodles and porridge. The brothers, on the other hand, take turns to be behind the chopping board and prepare the rice and chicken in big batches.
Every serving of chicken rice is drizzled with two types of sauces. I’ve never known what goes onto my food for years but it tastes really good, so I figured that it’s nothing nasty. But I was determined to find out what went onto my rice that day. Apparently, one of the sauces is sesame oil, and the other is a special gravy that they prepare themselves daily. Ah the mystery’s finally solved.
I got the Roasted Chicken Rice Set ($5), Shredded Chicken Porridge ($2.50) and Chicken Curry Noodles with Boiled Chicken ($4).
First up, the Roasted Chicken Rice Set Meal. With every good and balanced meal, there should always be a portion of vegetables. This is what the chicken rice set at Eng Kee provides. A well-balanced meal with vegetables, a braised egg and a generous amount of roasted meat. We also had a heap of rice too.
The roasted chicken was one of a kind — the skin was very well set on the meat, instead of being too crinkly, or pulling away too much from the meat. Although I would order the boiled chicken any day, this was still a very well marinated and tasty roasted chicken! The meat was tender, succulent and savoury.
Dip the meat into their shiok handmade chilli sauce which is addictively spicy and garlicky. You definitely need this for any chicken rice that you order. If you’re a spice lover, you will love it.
The rice is not as consistent as I would have liked. Some days, the rice is really good, and on other days, it can be quite lacklustre. But rest assured that it’s mostly fragrant, and not overly oily. Be sure to add in some dark soya sauce to complete the dish!
This was the first time I’m tasting the Shredded Chicken Porridge as it was always sold out whenever I wanted to get it. For just $2.50, this is a really huge portion! It is a very simple and comforting meal as it doesn’t have much seasoning. It is topped with some spring onions, deep-fried shallots and 油条 (fried dough fritters).
If you’re not satisfied with just a plain, simple and sticky porridge, you can add on some light soya sauce and pepper. Season it to your heart’s delight! Go easy on the soya sauce though, it’s quite concentrated and just a few drops of it makes the whole bowl salty. As for the pepper, just spam only.
Last but not least, I had the Chicken Curry Noodles! It’s one of the items that was added to the menu along the way and it, too, gets sold out by mid-day. You can opt for boiled or roasted chicken, but I would highly recommend the boiled chicken. This is another simple yet delectable bowl.
I had the boiled chicken when it was just fresh out of the cooking pot. It was one of the best versions of boiled chicken ever. The chicken skin was moist and not too oily, and it soaked up all the flavours from the soup so well.
There isn’t much that goes into the bowl except two pieces of tau pok and a whole bunch of yellow noodles. The soup was very light and smooth for curry soup. Don’t be deceived by the bright red and orange hues that trick you into thinking that it’s extremely spicy! It’s just the opposite. The soup was mildly spicy but was sweet too — just like how Hainanese curry tastes. It’s good for kids and for those of you whose spice tolerance is not as high!
To wrap this up, I feel that this chicken rice is still one of the best that I’ve tasted. If you’re around Eunos, I’d highly recommend you to come and have a taste of it! Plus, it’s just a short walk from the MRT station. Expect a queue during lunch hour, but don’t worry about being stuck in it for long as it moves quite quickly. Alternatively, you can skip the queue by ordering via the delivery platforms and schedule a pick-up time.
