Famous Tiong Bahru Five Spice Prawn Fritter and Fried Bee Hoon – It only opens for 2 hours!
April 27, 2021
Subtly joining the hall of fame at Zion Riverside Food Centre is Famous Tiong Bahru Five Spice Prawn Fritter and Fried Bee Hoon. Okay, that is a really long name so let’s just call it Wu Xiang for short.
While you might not have heard of this stall before, it is wildly popular among their regulars. The couple that runs Wu Xiang is a dynamic duo. The uncle prepares the food in exact portions according to the number of pax it is for. The aunty has a super memory. She remembers your seat number and order and serves you at your seat.
One unique thing about this stall is that you don’t get to choose what ingredients you want in your platter like how it is for other stalls. It has a fixed menu that includes Chinese Sausage, Tau Kwa, Salted Egg Yolk Blocks, Fish Cake, freshly-made Prawn Fritters and Ngoh Hiang (prawn rolls). I’m super glad that I don’t need to choose my own ingredients as it removes the stress of holding up the queue.
A two-pax portion costs $10. The price for a 1 pax portion is $5, so just multiply accordingly.
The highlight for me was the prawn fritters. Not only because it’s freshly made upon order, but because it has a great balance in texture. There are bean sprouts added to the fritter too. When the bean sprouts are deep fried, they basically just get charred and crispy, and lend an extra crunch that go very well with the juicy prawn bits. *chef’s kiss*
I highly recommend getting the bee hoon as well($1 per plate). It’s a simple plate of bee hoon but it goes hand in hand with the burst of flavours from the platter. Although it looks pale and bland, it’s actually very aromatic and it has a hint of pepper that is not too overpowering.
When we talk about this delightful dish, we always pay special attention to the dipping sauce as well. The dipping sauce provided at Wu Xiang is not the usual sweet tasting one. and is slightly different. Sliced onions are added to the reddish sauce, which make it resemble the sauce in canned sardines a little.
The addition of the sliced onions did help with the taste of the slightly spicy and tangy sauce, which was not overly sweet and complemented the savoury ingredients on the platter very well. The sauce cuts through the greasiness of the fried items easily.
Another interesting fact about Wu Xiang is that it only opens for just TWO hours daily (except Monday) from 12pm to 2pm or until they are sold out, which is usually before 2pm. So be sure to place your order as early as possible! The wait can take up to an hour even though there is no visible queue.
This is undoubtedly one of the hidden gems amongst big names like No. 18 Char Kway Teow and Zion Road Big Prawn Noodle at Zion Riverside Food Centre. Be sure to check them out when you’re there and hopefully, you don’t leave without a taste of Wu Xiang!
