I love discovering new stalls, and when their food is good, I get really excited! One day, our regular makan kaki invited me for breakfast. Usually, we struggle to decide where to eat, but that morning, he was adamant about taking me to Jalan Besar Hawker Centre to check out a fishball noodle stall. This definitely piqued my interest.

To be honest, the hawker centre was quite quiet. It was 9 am on a Tuesday, and it felt like the world hadn’t woken up yet. However, at Fatt Fishball Noodle Stall, the owner was already busy, skillfully squeezing fishballs from a huge basin of ikan parang fish paste. They were probably the only stall buzzing with a constant stream of customers.

It’s pretty rare to see stalls making their own fishballs these days. More often than not, stalls use factory-made fishballs and noodles — understandable given how much manpower, cost, and time is required to run a food business. To my delight, Fatt Noodle makes its own fishballs, meatballs, and even dumplings, showing their dedication to food quality.

The mee pok and mee kia that my friends ordered were cooked to al dente perfection. They were springy and, when tossed with sambal chilli and crispy pork lard, were absolutely shiok!

We also shared a whole piece of fish cake. The fried fish cake was soft and smooth, and so were the fishballs which were also slightly firm and springy. Both items were really delightful. I also enjoyed the meatballs.  This was undoubtedly a highly satisfying meal for me.

What amazed me the most were their handmade dumplings. I asked the cook if we could have a look at them close-up, and the dumplings were huge — probably the size of my fist! Inside the dumpling was a crunchy prawn, pork and chestnut, yum!
