With the borders to Malaysia open and our neighbours all ready to welcome us back in, massive crowds have been coming and going through immigration checkpoints. This has made me tuck my passport back away for the moment. Luckily for those of you who feel the same way, you can still have a taste of Malaysia at Fatty Ipoh Fried Noodles which cooks up a slew of Malaysian dishes.

Located within Pasir Panjang Food Centre, the stall offers classics such as KL Fried Noodles ($6), Moonlight Hor Fun ($5), Braised Yee Mee ($5) and Mee Tai Bak with Salted Fish ($6). It’s very similar to your typical zi char stall, and it can get quite busy but don’t worry about having to wait too long as you’ll be given a buzzer to let you know when it’s time to collect your food.

Beginning in ascending order of what I felt would have the most wok hei among the dishes I ordered, I tackled the Crispy Bee Hoon with Egg Sauce ($5). Smooth and delightfully eggy with a whisper of wok hei, the tasty sauce had been beautifully soaked up by the thin, crispy noodles that were fried to perfection without tasting oily.

I realised that all the dishes had the same selection of ingredients — prawns, fish slices, fishcakes, lean pork slices, greens and large chunks of freshly fried pork lard. The fish slices weren’t anything too special and the prawns were lacking that distinctive crunch and sweetness.

The slices of lean meat had a bit of bite but weren’t too tough, and went well with their house-made chilli that had a savoury spiciness and a zesty tinge that lingered.

Next up was the Wat Dan Hor with Crispy Hor Fun ($5) which came with the usual suspects plus a topping of crispy fried hor fun. Drenched in the same delicious egg sauce, the silky smooth hor fun emitted a pleasant smokiness that melded well with the gentle savouriness of the sauce. My comments on the ingredients here are pretty much the same as in the previous dish so my next words of praise go to the pork lard pieces.

All dishes come with a fairly generous amount of this sinful indulgence, and each one of them stayed nice and crispy even after being soaked in their respective sauces. Not to mention, they were huge in size! The same can be said for the ones found in the KL Fried Noodles.

Speaking of which, I expected this final dish on my list to have the heaviest amount of wok hei but the smokiness in the Wat Dan Hor with Crispy Hor Fun stood out more. I did appreciate how it was well fried in the sweet-savoury dark sauce which thoroughly coated the thick noodles that had a pleasant and slightly chewy texture.

I fancied the Wat Dan Hor with Crispy Hor Fun the most(not to mention the generosity of their large pork lard pieces)! It’s a pity that it takes quite a bit of time to get here but then again, we’d do almost anything for good food at affordable prices, won’t we?
