Five Guys – The Famous American Burger Joint Lands In Singapore!
December 19, 2019
In the past, watching videos of American fast food restaurants was a bittersweet affair for me. The sight of juicy beef patties and crispy fries would make me drool, but knowing that these burgers were nearly impossible to attain filled me with sadness. However, my burger dreams came true when Shake Shack opened its first outlet in October. Now, Five Guys, another American fast food institution, has opened its doors to hungry customers in Plaza Singapura. I had to pinch myself when I heard the news. Am I in burger heaven?
Five guys is known for giving customers the flexibility to customise their burgers. Choose from a whole host of ingredients including grilled onions and mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, hot sauce and more. Even the pickiest of eaters will find a suitable combination! I chose to go “All The Way”, which includes the classic toppings of Mayonnaise, Lettuce, Pickles, Tomatoes and Grilled onions and Mushrooms, topped with Ketchup and Mustard. It felt slightly ironic that going “All The Way” didn’t include every possible ingredient, but I guess that would have put too many strong flavours into one burger.
After placing your order, help yourself to a scoop of free peanuts while waiting. Peer through the glass panels and watch your burger being assembled by an army of cooks. The smell of fresh peanut oil wafts through the air, interwoven with the aroma of sizzling beef patties.
Once ready, your order number will be called. Head over to the counter and receive a brown bag, full of delicious goodies.
Within my brown bag was the cheeseburger and bacon burger ($15), regular-sized Five Guys Style fries ($9) and the Five Guys Shake ($10).
What struck me first about the Five Guys burgers were how soft and fluffy their buns were. I knew beforehand that the buns were made fresh five days a week, but the quality of the bread exceeded my already high expectations! Next up was the beef patties, which were seared to perfection. The outside was crispy and slightly charred, while the middle remained juicy and tender. Simply perfect!
The hand-cut fries also did not disappoint. Fresh from the fryer, the fries were crispy, yet fluffy. They were also really well salted, making them delicious all on their own without ketchup. The fries also come in Cajun style, which has a spice mix sprinkled over. If you like your fries with a spicy kick, try this one out!
Another must get if you are trying Five Guys for the first time is their milkshake. Like the burgers, these milkshakes come with lots of customisable options for both the base flavour and toppings. The must-have topping here is the bacon bits! I know it sounds strange, but trust me, you’ll thank me later.
The milkshake itself is thick and rich, and quite filling. I liked that the milkshakes were not overly milky, and you can taste the ingredients in them.
Five Guys lives up to the hype of being a famous overseas fast food restaurant and is definitely worth a try. If you are planning to make a trip down, make sure to come slightly before Five Guys opens at 11am. A line of more than 50 people formed within half an hour of their opening!
The only gripe I have is their high price point. This may make it difficult for customers (like myself) to come back frequently. That being said, Five Guys was definitely one of the best burger experiences I’ve had this year!
