Five Oars Coffee Roasters is no stranger to the local cafe scene. They were at Tanjong Pagar for a few years, and have just recently moved to Upper East Coast Road! The East side is indeed the best side.

This makes a good photo spot no matter where you sit. What’s more, you can bring your furkids along for brunch here! It’s a pet-friendly cafe, as long as you’re sitting outdoors.

The only downside to their overall interior design is the open kitchen. As someone particular about how I smell, the fact that the smoke was wafting into the seating area was a big no no for me. If I were to come here again. I would opt to sit outdoors. Having said that, it’s just my pet peeve and I understand that it doesn’t bother everyone.

Now, the food. They have a wide range of items on the menu. However, when I was there, almost everything that I wanted to try like the Pork Benedict ($19) and Baked Eggs ($20) was unavailable. I guess that’s understandable as it was only their fourth day of operations so things were still a little messy. So please be kind and give them some time to figure things out.

Thus, I settled for the Crab Scramble ($23) and Salted Caramel Banana Waffles ($18) with a cup of Flat White (6oz/ $5). Do note that all prices are subject to 7% GST and 10% service charge.

The crab scramble had actual crab meat in it, but it was a little fishy. But thankfully, that was solved by a squeeze of lemon. The shreds of crab meat that were topped with ebiko were not only scattered around the whole toast but were also embedded within the scrambled egg. The avocado was super ripe and it could almost pass off as a spread. Although the sourdough was hard to cut through, it was still delicious.

Five Oars is well-known for its coffee. I had the flat white, which had chocolatey and nutty notes. They did not specify which one of their house blends was used that day, but I’m guessing that it was Mahogany for this cup. It was my first time at Five Oars, but I get why many would be back for their coffee.

One of their desserts on the Day menu is the Salted Caramel Banana Waffle. The waffle is not the crispy and fluffy kind that most cafes serve.

Five Oars’ waffles are made from a sourdough batter. If you’re not a fan of such waffles, you might want to try their Buckwheat Pancake ($16) instead. The halved bananas had a layer of torched sugar on them which was interesting and a nice pairing with the waffle! My favourite topping was the sugar-coated hazelnuts as they were crunchy. Although this was a salted caramel waffle, I felt that the salted caramel was kind of muted as everything in it was just too sweet.

In a nutshell, I think that Five Oars makes a nice Sunday brunch spot. If you miss cafe hopping in Australia, you might want to make a trip here to reminisce those days! The wait for a table can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 20 minutes, so brace yourself for that. Good things are always worth the wait right?
