Thailand will always hold a special place in my heart, what with its shopping streets, divine massages and most importantly, authentic Thai food. I remember frequenting Golden Mile with my friends mainly for their mookata but Flying Pig had given me another reason to drop by again thanks to a certain $10 dish that’s said to satisfy my stomach without causing too much damage to my wallet.

Chill vibes are all around in this casual restaurant, outfitted by colourful plates adorning the walls to give the place character. Having seen photos of long lines leading up to the eatery during lunchtime on Facebook, I was thankful that there wasn’t any when I got there and was seated almost immediately. I was a bit surprised seeing the hefty price tags on the salads as a fair amount of them were more expensive than the main dishes.

The signature dish that I was most eager to try was the Crab Omelette Rice ($10). The fat pieces of crab meat were arranged almost uniformly on the omelette that covered a mound of fried rice. The egg was just how I like it, slightly runny but still mostly cooked through and the rice was pretty much your generic fried rice. Looks simple, but this is my kind of comfort food.

While the side of chilli wasn’t spicy, the sweet and savoury notes in it went well with the sweet crab meat. Spice lovers looking for that tongue-tingling punch can help themselves to the readily-available condiments on the table.

I wasn’t as impressed with the Pork Noodles ($7). I’m not sure whether it was because I got it with soup that made certain ingredients fall short, such as the lard. Far from crispy, they were almost lifeless and lacked flavour. The pork slices were the same and a bit too tough for my liking. The noodles and soup tasted decent but there was nothing really special about it. Maybe the dry version of it would have tasted better.

The Spicy Beef Tendon Soup ($10) had a bit of a vinegary taste, alongside a spiciness that I quite enjoyed. I’m not a tendon fan, but I guess I wouldn’t mind having them in this dish because they were chewy without being too tough.

I was very tempted by the Special Omelette Rice ($29) that came with lots more seafood, garlic pork and Thai basil pork so I’ll probably return with a few friends to try it out if I’m in the area. Or, I might just seek out the Crab Omelette Rice again.
