Gardens by the Bay (滨海湾花园)
November 24, 2012
Gardens by the Bay (滨海湾花园) is the latest park spanning 101 hectares of reclaimed land in central Singapore. A few months ago, I brought my relatives from China to take a stroll around the beautiful garden.
We started the walk at the OCBC Skyway, which is between two of the larger Supertrees. Because we went in the afternoon, so it is super hot. But you can enjoy a breathtaking aerial view of the Gardens. Come during the evening, it is definitely more cooling.
OCBC Skyway is a 128-metre long walkway that connects the two 25-metre Supertrees at the Supertree Grove, and take in a different view of the Gardens.
There are various eateries and restaurants within the park. The cheapest one is definitely Supertree Dining where you can tuck into local and international fare such as the noodles from Peach Garden Noodle House, fast food from Texas Chicken, Singaporean fare from Hill Street Coffee Shop and Western offerings from Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie and Casa Verde.
Because my relatives didn’t have a chance to try local food, I decided to buy them some local dishes at Hill Street Coffee Shop. We had nasi lemak, char kway teow, otah, hor fun, hokkien mee etc. And chicken wings for the little cousin!
After lunch, we visited the Flower Dome. Basically, the conservatory complex comprises two cooled conservatories – the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. The conservatories are energy efficient showcase of sustainable building technologies and to provide an all-weather edutainment space within the Gardens.
The Flower Dome is the larger of the two, at 1.2 hectares. It replicates cool dry conditions and will feature permanent displays of plants found in the Mediterranean and semi-arid tropical regions.
A changing display field has also been incorporated to enable flower shows and displays to be held within the conservatory.
I didn’t get a chance to visit The Cloud Forest that day but I will come back again.
Getting to Gardens by the Bay is easy. Just alight at Bayfront MRT Station, take exit B and follow the underground linkway. Cross the Dragonfly Bridge into Gardens by the Bay.
