Ghim Moh Carrot Cake – Fresh Carrot Cake Handmade Daily!
April 06, 2021
Another gem in Ghim Moh Market and Food Centre is Ghim Moh Carrot Cake. There is always a queue stemming from this stall no matter how early you’re there. However, they have a good plan to cope with this — Aunty Gek Choo’s daughter goes down the line to take your orders.
Many would know that they have another outlet at ABC Brickworks Market and Food Centre as well. It’s helmed by Aunty Gek Choo’s son, who took over the stall there when Ghim Moh Market’s renovations were done about 5 years ago as Aunty Gek Choo reopened the stall in Ghim Moh Market. Although I didn’t get to speak to her because she’s busy cooking, it was nice to see her in action!
They have four different portions of carrot cake – $2.50, $3, $4 and $5. Again, I had to tank this alone, so I decided to be less ambitious and go for the $2.50 portion for both the black and white versions. Even though I had the smallest portion, it was still quite a substantial portion and I had trouble finishing them.
Be sure to specify if you’re having your carrot cake there or taking it away! I forgot to mention that I was having it there, and was given my carrot cake in their default takeaway packet. I had to ask for a plate (oops).
First up, the white carrot cake. I had my reservations about white carrot cakes because I have always preferred the black one for its savoury and sweet taste. However, their rendition of white carrot cake is pretty unique. It comes in an omelette-like form, with the carrot cake bits embedded in the egg. This special form of carrot cake is so much easier to eat, as an entire piece can be picked up easily.
Another speciality of this carrot cake stall is its cai por which is marinated and prepared from scratch by Aunty Gek Choo daily. It has a more distinctive taste and flavour as compared to the usual ones out there. When I visit again, I would actually go for the white one… or maybe just get the yuan yang version of the carrot cake because I probably can’t make up my mind.
The black carrot cake, on the other hand, resembles those that you can find elsewhere. However, it tasted so much better. The carrot cake cubes were so soft and had a springier texture. The chilli given in this packet was quite little and I didn’t get to spread it out evenly, but the chilli was pretty solid. It had a strong spicy kick that complemented the savoury carrot cake very well.
It wasn’t too oily as well, which is great news for you healthy people! I love the balance between the sweetness of the black sauce and the savoury flavours. Be sure to add the chilli for an additional burst of flavours!
The secret to the soft and springy carrot cake is in the making of it. Most stalls would order their carrot cakes from a supplier but at Ghim Moh Carrot Cake, the team insists on making it freshly in their stall. Because of that, they only have a limited portion available daily.
Be sure to come early before they are sold out! On weekdays they are done by 12 to 1 pm. As for the weekends, they are usually sold out around 2 to 3 pm as they deliberately prepare more carrot cake to cater to the crowd. Be early to avoid disappointment!
