Ginger at PARKROYAL on Beach Road – Feast On A Free-Flow Buffet of International & Local Favourites
April 06, 2021
“Have I just arrived in Bali?” That was my first thought as I stepped into Ginger at PARKROYAL on Beach Road. The restaurant’s new look exuded major tropical vibes that had me envisioning a beautiful beach right outside to relax on after stuffing myself at their free-flow buffet of local delights. It is a nice change of ambience from your typical buffet haunts, not to mention that it makes for some great OOTD shots!
The botanical decor sees furniture in pastel hues of pink and olive green paired with wooden tables, and floral wallpaper inspired by, of course, the ginger plant. Floods of natural sunlight bathed the dining area through floor-to-ceiling windows which offer a lovely view of Kampong Glam. I thought the rattan ceiling fans were a unique touch and added a rustic charm. It was tastefully elegant yet casual at the same time, so diners will definitely feel very comfortable as they enjoy their food.
With it comes the Show Kitchen that sees various chefs showing off their chops as they make culinary magic happen.
A dazzling array of choices from their colourful and diversified menu awaits. Expect everything from international cuisine to local favourites such as Chilli Crab with Mantou, Singapore Laksa and Rojak. All free-flow, yay! Ordering has also never been easier; after scanning the QR code available at your table and ordering off the digital menu, your food will be served directly to your table.
Their Cold Appetisers section had classic Assorted Sushi and Sashimi Platters laden with fresh salmon, maguro (tuna) and octopus slices that were nice and thick. They also have a new Chirashi Don that comes in an adorable miniature portion (the team knows that you have to save your tummy space because there’s a lot more to look forward to!).
I always love BBQ and there is so much to choose from here! My plate was piled with Chicken Wings, Otah and Sate Lilit (a Balinese minced meat satay wrapped around lemongrass skewers). I also got the classic Singapore Satay; the grilled meat was so tender that it could be easily pulled off its stick and had a good smoky fragrance.
If you’ve been missing Ramly burgers like me, you can find a special version here! While these cute little creations are not as sinful as the ones from pasar malams (night markets), almost all the ingredients essential for a good Ramly burger such as the egg, chicken patty, lettuce and ketchup were present in the Ginger “Ramly” Burger.
Besides their prawn noodles and laksa, mee soto is also available now!
If seafood is your cup of tea, you can’t miss out on the Black Pepper Lobster! The tender lobster meat went amazingly with the sweet black pepper sauce which I especially loved. Some places go too heavy with the spices in their black pepper sauces but Ginger’s had me addicted from the first bite. Your favourite Chilli Crab is available too!
One of my favourite items was the Lobster Nasi Lemak. The mound of fragrant coconut rice was dyed with blue pea flowers and topped with strips of egg. Mixing it up with the sweet sambal chilli made the savoury rice even tastier. And instead of your usual fried ikan kuning (yellowtail scad) and chicken wing, the nasi lemak is graced with a meaty half-shelled lobster. Fancy!
I’m also a fan of the Grilled Ayam Percik. The juicy meat was marinated in flavourful spices, nicely caramelised, and wonderfully tender. I could go for a plate of this any day!
Another highlight that was incredibly satisfying was the Lamb Murtabak. Look forward to perfectly seasoned minced lamb that is wrapped in a crispy flatbread along with crunchy greens and leeks to balance out the food groups present. While I’m not usually one for lamb, this is one murtabak that has converted me.
You can’t wrap up a meal without ending with dessert! Be spoilt for choice by an assortment of nonya kueh, oneh oneh cake, oreo cheesecake, and more. I got so excited when I saw that they had putu piring! The steamed rice cake flour was packed with gula melaka (palm sugar) and practically melted in my mouth. These putu piring are delivered daily from the famous Haig Road Putu Piring to allow guests to sample these Michelin-Recommended delicacies.
My love for milo knows no bounds, so you can imagine my reaction (which was lots of over-excited squealing) when they brought the Milo “Dinosaur” Ice Cream to my table. It just so happened to be a sweltering day out, making this icy treat the perfect choice of dessert. Just like the milo dinosaur in coffee shops, the smooth ice cream had a sprinkling of milo powder and came with a butter waffle biscuit. Its texture was almost like soft-serve and was rich without being too jelak.
Make sure to come with empty bellies because you’ll be leaving Ginger with a no-regrets food coma. Book now to avoid disappointment!
