I have had countless plates of chicken rice. However, this the first time that I have heard of and encountered Green Chilli Chicken Rice.

I was just walking around the food centre when I saw a queue in front of this stall. Upon closer inspection, I realised they only offer one item on their menu — Green Chilli Chicken Rice. I was really curious about this plate of chicken rice. It must be really good, for it to be the only item on the menu.

Mr Hj. Mustajab started this stall in 2014. He used to be a Police Officer before he started selling coconuts along the streets. And now he’s selling his signature Green Chilli Chicken Rice.

Each plate of Green Chilli Chicken Rice goes for $4.50, and it comes with a generous serving of Basmati Rice, some keropok and a chicken thigh topped with their famous green chilli. They also have a different type of red chilli to go along with your rice. You can help yourself to as many servings of the free Chicken Soup as you like.

The Basmati Rice was really good! It was light and fluffy, and the grains remained separate rather than being clumped together. It had this nice fragrance to it, and was really soft too.

Mr Hj. Mustajab gets his keropok from a supplier. It is the fish-flavoured ones, and it was crispy and went well with the dish.

Cooked with chicken bones and big ginger slices, the chicken soup had quite a strong taste of ginger. It also had quite a strong taste of spices. This is the kind of soup that I would want to have on days when I am down with a cold.

Now, moving on to the star of the show, the Chicken Thigh topped with Green Chilli! Lightly fried for about 2 minutes, the chicken had a slightly crisp skin. I could taste the slightly salty marinade in every bite of the chicken. The meat was tender and it came off the bone easily, making it very easy to eat.

The Green Chilli was something I have never had before. It was spicy, sweet and salty all at the same time. This chilli gave the whole dish a very refreshing taste. The red chilli that came along was also very flavourful, with a tinge of sourness. Both chilli packed quite a manageable level of heat, and I really liked the Green Chilli. Take note that it can get quite spicy if you have them both together.

I was rather impressed with the harmony of flavours in this Green Chilli Chicken Rice. It was the first time I’ve ever tried a dish like this and I’m sure it will not be the last!
