GRUB at Bishan Park – Casual Bistro Fare
June 11, 2013
Fans of Cookyn Inc will be delighted to know that Chef Mervyn Phan has recently opened a casual bistro in Bishan Park! Set in the middle of a beautiful park with lush greenery all around, the friends treated me for dinner there one evening.
This 70-seater restaurant offers casual bistro fare that pivots around Chef Phan’s philosophy of using responsibly sourced and natural fresh ingredients without MSG, artificial preservatives or flavourings.
Truffles and eggs are a match made in heaven. Truffled Egg Cocotte with parma ham and focaccia ($7) is affordable but quite wonderful indulgence. Warm and crispy toast is dipped into the egg cocotte, what goes into your mouth is smooth and runny egg with an addictive truffle aroma.
I was very upset that I didn’t have a chance to eat mussels when I was in Paris. So after I came back, I was craving for it very much. Hence I requested to order Tasmanian mussels & chorizo stew ($19). I was disappointed with it because I expected it to be a thick and hearty stew but it was too watery and very bland.
GRUB Cheeseburger ($11) served with fries, however, was very well done. 100% freshly minced beef patty with melted Monterey Jack cheese. The beef patty was juicy, thick and tender, which gives you a good bite. Fresh crunchy lettuce and melted Monterey Jack cheese definitely make it more palatable!
Another dish that caught our menu is the Slow roasted Pork Belly ($15) with mango sauce, mash, cherry tomatoes salsa. This super tender pork belly is slow roasted to perfection. The meat is melt in your mouth moist, the gentle sweet flavor of the tomato is lovingly balanced with the sourness of the mango sauce and mash.
Dinner ended with Belgium Waffles with butter and maple syrup ($6.50).
Wash it all down with a range of craft beers from New Zealand and Belgium, or a cup of locally roasted java from Liberty Coffee. The friends also got me a lovely strawberry shortcake from Flor which was a very lovely surprise! Thank you guys!
By the way, no reservations allowed at GRUB but there should be enough seats and you don’t have to wait too long for your turn. They also serve weekend brunch so I will be back to try the dishes!
