Happy Chef Western Food – Perfectly Cooked Steak at just $10!
May 12, 2018
Update: The stall has shifted to Blk 465. Article updated to reflect the new address.
When someone mentions the name Tai Hwa Eating House, I immediately think of the famous one Michelin-starred Bak Chor Mee stall – the one with notoriously long queues. However, if you’re in the Lavender area and you don’t have an hour or two to spare queuing, you can hop over to Happy Chef Western Food just next door! This family-run Western stall has been open for 14 years. Their menu has a staggering number of dishes – there are 30 items on there! It doesn’t matter what you’re craving that day, Happy Chef Western Food has got you covered.
I ordered their Sirloin Steak ($10.00) and signature Happy Chef Chicken ($7.00). After a short 10-minute wait, my order arrived. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium-rare and indeed it was! The generously portioned steak had a slightly blackened char on the surface while still having a pink centre. In my opinion, this balance between a crispy, smoky exterior and a medium rare interior is not easy to achieve! The steak also had a good amount of fat content which made it juicy and tender. In addition, it is served with a brown gravy, made in-house. According to Mr Teo, the sauce is made with a blend of herbs and some vegetables, such as carrots and celery. The brown gravy carried a distinct aroma of thyme and had just the right consistency to coat the steak. Overall, at just $10.00, I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of steak and the skill that went into preparing it.
At a price of $7.00, the Happy Chef Chicken comes as a chicken chop that is glistening with a coat of barbecue sauce. The chicken was cooked all the way through but remained moist and tender. The meat itself didn’t have much flavour, so the sweet barbecue sauce really helped to lift the dish with its acidic tang. Personally, I would not travel all the way to Tai Hwa Eating House just to eat this. However, as far as chicken chops go, this was pretty standard and decent.
For each main dish you order, you may also select two sides out of the variety of options that Happy Chef offers. I chose to have the mashed potatoes and coleslaw with my steak, while I had French fries and steamed vegetables with my chicken chop. Out of these side dishes, the French fries were definitely my favourite. Each fry was crispy on the outside, while the potato itself remained fluffy.
After having their Sirloin Steak, I am definitely coming back to try their other dishes. Happy Chef Western Food has indeed made me a happy customer!
