Haru Haru – Promising Japanese Restaurant in Ang Mo Kio
April 12, 2017
A modest Japanese restaurant located on the second floor of Jubilee Square, Haru Haru offers authentic Japanese cuisine in a comfortable setting.
An alluring and highly recommended dish at Haru Haru, the Wagyu Don ($24.80) features tender and fatty wagyu beef that has been seared to medium-rare. The wagyu is then sliced thinly and placed on a bed of rice, before it is topped with caramelised onions, fried shallots, garlic chips and a rich homemade sweet brown sauce. The sauce is similar to a combination of teriyaki sauce and demi-glace. Specially boiled with chicken bones and reduced with rendered beef fat from the wagyu, the sauce, together with smoky charred caramelised onions, gave the dish a rich umami.
The batter used for the tempuras Ten Don ($10.80) at Haru Haru was crispy yet extremely light. For $10.90, you get a big slice of green capsicum, mushroom, carrot, 2 sweet medium-sized ebi, and a generous serving of Agedama (aka fried tempura batter). The tempuras were all lightly fried – the veggies retained their crunch and you could still taste their natural sweetness.
Delicious and unpretentious, this dish totally surpassed my expectations of a $10.80 tendon. My only gripe is that the rice used was not Japanese rice, but long grain rice. Nevertheless, it was a great meal at Haru Haru!
