If I could pinpoint one of the hottest food trends this year, it has to be fried rice! This eggy deliciousness is taking the nation by storm in this second part of 2021, with numerous fried rice stalls springing up across the island. Recently, a new fried rice stall opened in a secluded Ang Mo Kio coffee shop.

Started by former Din Tai Fung chef, Lian Hong, who has over a decade of culinary experience, Hong Style Fried Rice serves affordable fried rice that’s a good Din Tai Fung fried rice dupe. He now runs the stall with his partner and former protégé, Wei Guong.

Although the stall had only opened in July this year, it has already gained popularity with many Ang Mo Kio residents as constant long queues are observed during lunch hour.

The stall offers four types of fried rice: Garlic Egg Fried Rice, Sambal Egg Fried Rice, Malay Egg Fried Rice, and Golden Egg Fried Rice. Patrons can add on pork chop, shrimp, Chinese sausage, and luncheon meat.

After waiting for an hour in the sweltering heat, I could finally tuck into the piping hot plates of rice. I tried the famous Golden Egg Fried Rice with Pork Chop ($6.50), which, true to its name, featured fluffy rice grains lusciously coated with egg.

Hints of wok hei can be detected even with the taste of egg dominating the dish. The golden mountain was topped with large pieces of crisp pork chop that’s deep-fried upon order. Each piece of pork chop was juicy, and had a peppery flavour that complemented the richness of the fried rice. After adding some chilli oil to the mix, I would say that the stall’s version of fried rice rivals that of Din Tai Fung’s, and at almost half the price.

Next, I tried the Golden Egg Fried Rice with Chinese Sausage ($5.50) that unfortunately paled in comparison to the former. The lup cheong was too hard, and somewhat bland. Thankfully, Lian Hong’s expert control of the wok and fire saved the dish as the golden egg fried rice delivered in both the fragrance and flavour departments.

I saved the best for last. I dug into the Garlic Egg Fried Rice with Shrimp ($6.70), which had an addition of fried garlic in the fried rice, last. The garlic elevated the rice with intermittent punches of distinctive fragrance.

If you want some delicious Din Tai Fung-style fried rice without breaking the bank, hurry over to Hong Style Fried Rice which can give Din Tai Fung a run for its money.
