Hundred Acre Creamery – Handmade Gelato and Premium Viet Coffee
December 21, 2020
At Hundred Acre Creamery, it’s all about spreading love and joy. This new Winnie the Pooh inspired cafe at Clementi boasts a variety of special gelato flavours made from fresh ingredients. Edmund and Linh, a husband and wife team and owners of Hundred Acre, experimented with ice cream making during the circuit breaker period and it turned out to be more than mere interest. With lots of affirmation from friends and family, they decided to start Hundred Acre Creamery.
Edmund shared how they love and resonated deeply with the story of Winnie The Pooh thus, the cafe had the essence of Hundred Acre Wood as seen in Winnie the Pooh incorporated in the cafe’s interior design. The interior also features Linh’s illustration on the walls that added vibrancy to the place. It is their hope for customers to gather in their cafe just as how Christopher Robin and friends in the cartoon, gathered at Hundred Acre to share and enjoy life.
On their menu is a wide range of items that have both authentic Vietnam flavours and a fusion with local flavours. With the coconut sorbet being their signature flavour, it is served in various forms like affogato and on a pandan waffle. We ordered the Coco Pandan ($10), that included coconut sorbet, coconut pandan waffle, peanut toppings and gula melaka sauce.
They are generous with the gula melaka sauce given, as they drizzled it when plated and had some on the side for you to add more to your liking. While the pandan waffle was a little tough to cut up, it was still tasty when paired with the sorbet and gula melaka. I believe that they will be working on that batter as they go along. Overall, the Coco Pandan is the whole package that you didn’t know that you needed.
We also tried the iced Viet Premium Drip Coffee ($5.50). Linh would recommend that you go for the usual amount of condensed milk as the Viet coffee has a bitter aftertaste. However, if you’d like your coffee strong and dense, let her know to add less condense milk. It is served with the drip filter and patience is key before enjoying the super gao coffee. Good things are worth the wait.
Edmund mentioned how they had to sweep across various places in Vietnam in search of the perfect coffee powder for Hundred Acre. It indeed paid off. The drip coffee is thick and it is stronger than the usual kopi gao you’ll get from most coffee shops. Even with condensed milk mixed in. You know where to get your perk for the day if you need quality strong coffee! For some, it may be a little too overwhelming as it was for me who loves a good cuppa. I’d recommend that you get the iced version and have a chat with your friend while the ice melts and dilutes your coffee.
With the amount of effort put into practising their craft of ice cream making and coffee searching, they decided to combine the two and created Ca Phe ($3.80, single scoop), a coffee gelato. It does look amazing, and it would be one that I’ll come back for!
They also specially imported butter avocados from Linh’s hometown, Da Lat, Vietnam for the ice cream making process. As they felt that the avocado from Australia and Mexico doesn’t have the kind of buttery texture they wanted. It was very intriguing to see it as we were surprised by its shape. What a cute species of avo!
As we conversed more about the heart behind the brand, Edmund enthusiastically introduced each ice cream flavour available on the menu. It was very heartening to see he had such passion for what he does and knowing that each flavour is not just another experiment but it’s almost like a “baby” of his. It is especially so for the Dark Chocolate Sorbet ($3.80, single scoop). A dairy-free and vegan-friendly option, it’s the pride and joy of Edmund. He spent the most time on the research and development of this flavour as he was really inspired by Tom’s Palette’s rendition of it. This is another item that I’ll be back in the wild wild west for.
Even though it’s only the first week of their operations, they are already gaining traction with the residents in the area. With their unique branding and interior design that stands out amongst the other shops, they’re not difficult to spot. It is only a stone’s throw from the bus stop, Blk 109 (Bus Stop No. 12061) and there is a signboard leading you in.
A highly recommended cafe to chill at after supper for all you westies as they are opened till 12am!
