I AM @ Tampines Hub – The Marvellous Matcha Trend Is Back

Most of you will be familiar with this halal-certified cafe, I AM @ Haji Lane. Started in August 2013, the idea of I AM cafe struck Muhamad Jamuri Bin Busori when he accompanied his wife on a business trip to Amsterdam. He fell in love with the atmosphere and culture of the Dutch, hence was inspired to set up a café revolving around the things he loved about Amsterdam. He partnered with friends-turned-brothers, Jaffar Bin Sariban and Salle Bin Ahmad, and opened I AM cafe. Just this March, a second outlet was opened at Tampines Hub.

The menu remains the same as their Haji Lane outlet, with the exception of 2 new creations that are served exclusively at the Tampines Hub outlet. Beast from the East a.k.a Charcoal-Grilled ‘The Quest’ Burger ($18.90) consists of I AM’s signature charcoal-grilled beef patty marinated with 7 different herbs, topped with turkey bacon, in-house special spicy avocado spread, a dash of truffle mayo and BBQ sauce stacked between Matcha infused buns. The matcha flavour was insignificant, but the buns are fluffy with crispy edges, done just the way we like.

The other newly curated item is Squid Ink Pasta ($18.90). Yes, the pasta features a silky black hue of squid ink tonnarelli, but to our disappointment, the sauce tastes simply like bolognese. It would’ve been better if squid ink sauce was used. This pasta dish is topped with fresh squids, boasting a slightly chewy texture, cooked just right.

Besides the 2 items that are only available at Tampines Hub, the scene-stealer Soft-Shell Crab Burger ($16.90), also available at their Haji Lane outlet, uses freshly made toasted buns. The burger contains crispy soft-shell crab, with pickled beetroot and wasabi mayonnaise. The soft-shell crab is surprisingly quite juicy.

You can also find sandwich, seafood, pizza, and other comfort food on I AM cafe’s menu. They also serve a variety of refreshing mocktails. If you haven’t visited Tampines Hub, this is a good chance to pop by and explore the East side of our little red dot.
