Ipoh Curry Noodle Chee Cheong Fun – Delicious Curry Chee Cheong Fun in Yishun
February 16, 2021
Have you heard of Curry Chee Cheong Fun? At A’Posh Bizhub, you can find a legit bowl of Ipoh curry chee cheong fun with thick curry gravy, along with other dishes like wanton mee and Ipoh hor fun.
After coming all the way to the land of Yishun, we had to try the unique curry chee cheong fun and more (of course) to make this trip worthwhile. Hence, we ordered the Ipoh Curry Chee Cheong Fun with Char Siew and Roasted Meat ($5.50), Wanton Mee ($3.50) and Ipoh Hor Fun ($3.50).
For starters, we had to try the 重头戏 (highlight) and key reason to be in Yishun at all. The Ipoh Curry Chee Cheong Fun with Char Siew and Roasted Meat didn’t let us down. It was unique and the meats that came with it complemented it very well. It makes for a very hearty breakfast, but I’d recommend having it for lunch because it’s really filling.
The char siew part used here is slightly different from the one in the wanton mee — it had chunks of meat with both a thick layer of fat and lean meat together. While it wasn’t as fatty as I’d have liked, it had a good ratio of fat to meat, and I enjoyed the textural contrast. The chee chong fun was smooth, and quite filling.
The curry gravy was really thick. It was fragrant and not as spicy as I had expected it to be. The best bit was actually the pig’s skin that was thoroughly soaked in the curry. The flavours of the pig’s skin together with the rich curry made such a good pairing. I was just constantly digging around in my bowl for more pig’s skin.
If I had to pick out some things that made this dish a little less than perfect, it would be that the long beans tasted a little raw. Perhaps you can request for a switch to the xiao bai cai if you’re particular. My other gripe was that the roasted meat’s skin was not crispy. That was a little sad, but it was still quite tasty and not too salty!
While there was nothing too special about the wanton mee and Ipoh hor fun, they were decently flavourful and are good options for a quick lunch.
The wanton mee was scattered with char siew slices and vegetables. If you’re wondering, the wanton is served in a small bowl of soup on the side. The noodles rested in a pool of thick gooey sauce that held the noodles together.
If anything was the highlight of this dish, it would be the char siew. It was not the typical soft and fatty char siew. This char siew had a texture that was almost like bak kwa, and it may not be the easiest to chew through. It’s definitely not the best char siew for those who might have difficulty chewing (e.g. : folks with braces). Having said that, it was rather well marinated and evenly charred. You’ll definitely taste the sweetness and smokiness.
As opposed to the wanton mee, the Ipoh hor fun was plated neatly with a set of skinned chicken lined up in the middle of the plate. Do give the white noodles a good toss so that every strand is evenly coated with the brown sauce gathered at the bottom of the plate, before you dig in.
I think that the curry chee cheong fun is worth a try, but I wouldn’t go the distance just for it. If you stay in the north and are looking for something new to try, this could be a good one! The Grab uncle that drove me back to the office from A’Posh Bizhub said he lived in Yishun all his life but haven’t heard of this before, and that he’ll give it a try one of these days. That could be you too!
