James’ Quesadilla & Brunch – Mexican Food Under $10 in Amoy Street Food Centre
May 17, 2022
Amidst the sea of notable hawker stalls in Amoy Street Food Centre, lies James’ Quesadilla & Brunch.
Chef James offers breakfast burritos from 7.30-10.30am. Unfortunately when I got there at 10am, his breakfast menu had already sold out. The rice bowls that are only served during lunch were also not ready yet.
I started my meal with his signature Pulled Pork Quesadilla Set ($8.50) that came with a side of chips and salsa. Undoubtedly, the star of the show was the pork! It was extremely tender and there was an explosion of flavours in my mouth with every bite. But that would be a given, since it is slow cooked for 24 hours. The creaminess of the mozzarella cheese also enhanced the savouriness of the pork, while the red cabbage added a refreshing crunch.
The homemade tomato salsa was the perfect combination of sweet, savoury, spicy and zesty notes. It definitely makes for the perfect snack, especially when enjoyed with the lightly salted crispy chips.
Packed with chunks of chicken breast, the Sous Vide Chicken Breast Burrito ($5.50) had a generous mix of red cabbage, lettuce and salsa. Chicken breast is a cut that can get dry easily, so the moist chicken here was definitely delightful!
I also had the Pulled Beef Quesadilla to which I topped up an additional $1.50 to make it a set with chips and salsa ($8.50) too. The layer of cheese complemented the stewed pulled beef well, though I think the beef could afford to be more tender and juicy.
A queue started to form just before noon, and with only Chef James manning the store, I can only imagine how much longer it will get when lunch hour kicks in. So, be sure to head there early to avoid a long wait!
I know I will definitely be back for the pulled pork dishes and to try the breakfast burrito!
