Michelin Bib Gourmand 2024 features 81 establishments, and you might be wondering what to try first. Well, if you love the flavours of Penang, Jason Penang Cuisine should be at the top of your list!

Jason, the owner, has over 30 years of culinary experience under his belt. He was even the British High Commissioner’s Resident Chef for 14 years! He then decided to open up this stall with his wife to serve authentic Penang cuisine. The menu is simple and lean with only 6 items. His bestsellers — the Penang Char Kway Teow, Assam Laksa and Prawn Noodle Soup — only costs $4 each!

Penang’s version of Char Kway Teow is well known for its wok-hei and use of creamy duck eggs. The version here has a nice smokiness and char, albeit lacking a little in creaminess as chicken eggs are used instead. The seared bits of lap cheong here act like little treasure troves of flavour, elevating the dish.

Jason’s Penang Assam Laksa uses Yellowtail Fish, as opposed to the more common Mackerel. The broth is very appetising, with citrusy notes from tamarind and a lovely savouriness from prawn paste. I can easily demolish an entire bowl of this all by myself.

In addition to prawn shells, pork ribs are used to make the Prawn Noodle broth. This combination brings about a robust, full-bodied, and rich broth that carries a light sweetness. You can mix in some chilli paste for a kick of spiciness.
