(CLOSED) Joo Chiat Beef King – The King of the North?
October 11, 2018
Despite its name, Joo Chiat Beef King is located in Toa Payoh and not Joo Chiat. Joo Chiat Beef King is helmed by an unknown chef who did not want to be named. Mr Chef shared that he has had bad experiences with food bloggers who extorted money from him just to get featured on their site. He didn’t feel comfortable with some questions, including his name, so I didn’t probe further.
Mr Chef is from Shan Dong and has been working and running Joo Chiat Beef King for 6 years now. He told me that the recipes that he follows were developed in his own home back in Shan Dong, China. Joo Chiat Beef King got its name from the previous tenants but Mr Chef said he didn’t feel like there was a need to change the signboard so he didn’t bother. Mr Chef also shared that he prepares his beef daily in the morning so as to maintain the consistency of his food.
We ordered the Dry Beef Noodles ($3.50) and Beef Tendon Kway Teow ($6). The dry beef noodles came in a dark sauce which carried a pleasant sweetness. However, it was a little too sweet for my liking. The beef chunks were rather tender but lacked the distinct beefy flavours that I was expecting. I guess I shouldn’t be complaining since the beef noodles only cost $3.50
The beef tendon kway teow was completed with a generous amount of bite-sized beef tendons. Diners can choose from regular yellow noodles, kway teow or beehoon. Unfortunately, the broth fell short of our expectations as it lacked depth and flavour. I would skip this and go straight for the dry beef noodles on my next visit.
Beef noodle stalls have been quite popular in hawker centres these days, and I’m really happy because beef noodles have always been one of the comfort food that I turn to. This might not be the best beef noodle stall in Singapore for me, but don’t take my word for it, because it might be the best for you. Try it and let us know!
