Kian Seng Seafood Restaurant – Cze Char in Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 1
June 21, 2013
I love Ang Mo Kio because there are always so many nice food places. And although I have stayed here since birth, there are always so many new discoveries. I think I can set up a food blog just to blog about nice places to eat in Ang Mo Kio. Alright to be fair, other places like Toa Payoh or Bedok also has lotsa nice food to eat lah!
I think birthday celebration is the best reason to try a new food place. The family was asking me where do I want to go for my birthday treat. Two years ago, I picked Yew Yuan Goh Kee Restaurant at Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2. This year, I found another one — Kian Seng Seafood Restaurant at Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 1! I think I have conquered all the industrial parks in Ang Mo Kio liao! HAHA!
The boss started working since he was a teenager to help relieve the family’s burden. He worked as a coffeeboy, kitchen helper and slowly worked his way to be a cook. Kian Seng Restaurant was set up in the 1960s. Previously it was located in near Yio Chu Kang Stadium as an air-conditioned restaurant. He decided to get another branch at Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 1 now known as Kian Seng Seafood Restaurant. Unable to get the tender at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium, he decided to focus solely on the Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 1 restaurant.
There dishes here has a variety of chinese dishes, those you can get from zi char stall or restaurant can all be found here! Food like Sweet Sour Pork, Fried KaiLan to Buddha Jump Over the Wall and Roast Suckling Pig (charcoal roasted on the spot). They also serve old teochew dishes like Steamed Vegetable with Dried Scallops, Braised Whole Sea-Cucumber with Pork Fillings, Braised Duck with Chestnut Fillings and Yam Paste with Pumpkin.
Anyway, the photo above is my birthday mee sua prepared upon request.
Cereal prawn has always been the long-time favorites among Singaporeans. Golden Cereal Prawns ($18/$24/$30) is so crispy that you can almost each the prawn shells. The prawns are fresh of course and we fell in love with it.
Handmade Prawn Roll (Ngoh Heong, $8/$12/$16)
Venison with Ginger & Spring Onion ($16/$20/$24) is quite expertly handled, I would say. Stir fried with ginger and spring onion, we were rewarded with its wonderful flavour, almost silky texture and savoury juices.
I love to order frog leg with ginger and spring onion when I go to a cze char stall. But this time, I decided to have something more different than usual — Steamed Frog with Chicken Essence ($7 each, min 2 frog)! The frogs used though not particularly big, were quite meaty and packed the most smooth, tender and succulent flesh ever. The additional of chicken essence made it similar to harbal soup, it keep the body warm especially rainy days.
Of course must order some vegetables. Here’s our Spinach with Superior Stock ($10/$16) with 3 types of eggs.
One of the signature here is Nonya Fish Head ($20/$22). It is different from the curry fish head you have tasted elsewhere. It is spicy and sour at the same time and is sure to boost your appetite. It is served together with Lady’s Fingers and Tomatoes. Fish usually used is Red Snapper.
And of course, not forgetting my usual birthday cake – Durian Mousse Cake from Goodwood Park! Their annual durian fiesta is back! From now till 21 July 2013, they have an exciting range of durian cakes and pastries are available at the Deli for takeaway, each filled with the richness and goodness of the finest D24 or Mao Shan Wang durians.
Another signature here, which I haven’t tried, is their Roasted Suckling Pig. Probably I will be back next time to try it! Oh, if you are here for dinner, don’t worry about having no air con here. It is a open space coffee shop so it is quite windy at night.
