Opened in February 2017 at the relatively new Hillion Mall in Bukit Panjang, Kowloon Bay HK Cafe serves traditional roast meats, as well as, surprising Chinese-Western fusion dishes. The cafe exudes a homely atmosphere, and it was quite spacious as compared to the cramped and rowdy “cha chaan teng” you see in Hong Kong. The menu is very extensive, and we picked a few signatures to try.

The Signature Fei Po Char Siew Noodle ($9.90) features springy noodles cooked till al dente, topped with a portion of char siew, and some vegetables. The char siew is well marinated, and has a sweet finish. The only factor we found disappointing is the gravy that was slightly bland.

The Kowloon Bay Seafood ($15.90) boasts either pasta or rice in an Italian tomato sauce. Braised prawns, squid rings, clams and crab meat lie in the mix and the entire ensemble is topped with mozzarella cheese. This dish will certainly win the hearts of children, but the seafood was not as fresh and as well prepared as we expected. They were a tad too fishy.

A popular fusion dish at Kowloon Bay HK Cafe is their Croissant with Char Siew ($7.90), which comes with a side of salad and fries. This interesting combination amazed our tastebuds. The croissant itself is fluffy, and buttery, just the way we like it. It is also baked to a crisp golden brown. The char siew gives this dish a savoury twist, which works really well.

Last but not least, don’t forget to pair your mains with an iced cold Kowloon Bay Special Drink. The Hong Kong Special Milk Tea ($3.50 hot / $4.50 iced) is a good thirst-quencher. However, what really impressed us was the Tea & Coffee Dance ($7.90), otherwise known as “yuan yang”. Instead of serving this beverage already mixed, the milk tea and the coffee are served separately. The milk tea is served in a glass surrounded by a bucket of ice, to ensure that it wouldn’t be diluted even after being left out for awhile, while the coffee comes frozen in cubes. Just pour the milk tea into the coffee glass, give it a stir, and there you have it!

Kowloon Bay HK Cafe also offers rose soy chicken, Hong Kong crispy belly, congee, and many other dishes. Residents staying near Bukit Panjang have something new to look forward to!
