La Taperia – Spanish Fare Tucked Away in Orchard Road
April 21, 2015
Spanish cuisine is no foreign flavor to our city of perennial foodies but if you think you’ve had a taste of Spain worth ticking off your bucket list, try La Tapería by award winning Les Amis Group in Shaw Centre. Shoving aside gimmicks and celebrity chefs, this intimate Spanish nook opened late October last year is sharpening their knives to bring a wider repertoire to fill the market.
Perched one level above the Group’s stretch of restaurants along the quaint corner street of Shaw Centre, this charming nook overlooks the roadside from the outdoor balcony, while its indoor façade recreates a traditional Spanish home with iron rods that give a peek into the private dining table through curved windows. Focused on a holistic dining experience with Spanish signatures, affordable booze, a curated genre of music and late closure.
Tapas signatures include Gambas Al Ajillo ($18) with juicy and fresh prawns served sizzling in olive oil with lots of diced garlic and a bit of chilli pepper to add a touch of spice. Huevos Estrellados con Patatas Paja ($18) features fried egg with ibérico chorizo, piquillo red pepper, mushroom and straw potato. The creamy egg with thin fries sealed the deal for me. Costillitas de Cordero a la Parrilla ($25) features charcoal grilled lamb rib confit that is suitably fork tender and doused in sticky-sweet honey mustard.
My favourite is Paella de Bogavante ($66). Blazenly flavoured and coloured with saffron, it was one of the most delicious dishes at La Tapería. It is generously paired with lobster, runner bean and tomato. The rice is moist and so addictive. The lobster contributed to its flavour too.
The Churros Con Chocolate ($14) was merely passable for me. It was too airy and too oily for me. Order this only if you insist on churros. While the name is decidedly plain, Marquesa De Chocolate ($14) is hardly that. The chocolate marquise is thick and creamy, topped with baked almond praline. I ordered this as the buddy’s birthday cake.
