Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery – Enjoy a platter of nonya kueh at Ultimate Hawker Fest 2014!
November 20, 2014
Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery is an old traditional shop in Bedok which has more than 48 years of making its own ang ku kuehs, nonya kuehs and other festivals kuehs everyday.
Third generation owners Gavin used to work in a oil and gas industry. His grandparents started making ang ku kuehs since the 60s, then his parents took over the business. Now that the parents are getting older, he gave up his corporate job and decided to take over the business. It is so rare to find such traditional shops in Singapore now. And I am so glad Gavin, the third generation, continue to run this shop.
Ang Ku Kueh (红龟糕) is a small round Chinese pastry with soft sticky skin and fillings. It looks like a tortoise shell, hence the name. Tortoise represents longevity, hence it is eaten during religious offerings or during a child’s first month birthday. Here, the skin is chewy and not very thick. It’s mung bean fillings has an elegant texture and flavour.
The Soon Kuehs here are pretty famous too. The ladies make them every afternoon and the skin is soft and slippery. When steamed, the skin was translucent and thin, packed with big fat fillings. These kuehs are sold fresh everyday over the counter and contain no preservative. It costs 70 cents each.
Something unique we saw was bak kueh. Made with savoury skin wrapped in minced chicken and mung beans, it resembles the taste of dumplings. Gavin said, they used to make this in their shop. But has stop doing it and only make it during their family occasions.
So… for Ultimate Hawker Fest, Gavan will be preparing an assortment of nonya kuehs, which includes a kueh lapis, kueh salat, ang ku kueh, mini prawn soon kueh and bak kueh.
Here’s a short interview I did with Gavan. Video shot with Iphone 5, by Ian.
