Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice – One of the Best Curry Rice in Singapore!
May 07, 2022
Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice needs no introduction. The snaking queues at their previous Seng Poh Road Coffeeshop location, and now, at their new outlet in Tiong Bahru Market, show how big their loyal customer base is. Their new space spans 2 hawker stalls which previously housed the Original Tiong Bahru Golden Pig & Roasted.
Loo’s has been in Tiong Bahru since 1946, so it was comforting to know that their new stall was still in the neighbourhood. Mr Loo Kia Chee, the second-generation owner, has been at the helm for more than 40 years, leading his rather large team. Don’t be deterred by the long queues which could start forming from as early as 10am, as service is quick.
To up the Shiok factor, I had to order their famous dishes, which include their Pork Chop, and a bowl of their famed 3-day curry.
All the dishes were delicious, but if I had to pick (a few of) my favourites, it would be the Braised Pork, Sambal Sotong, and Cabbage. As someone who dislikes pork belly with too much fat, Loo’s braised pork is made with the perfect cut – the fat to meat ratio was perfect, and not too jelak. The tender pork was well marinated and well infused with the flavours of the braising liquid.
Their Cabbage reminded me of Chap Chye, just without black fungus. Sweet, with a little crunch, yet not too cooked til the point of mushiness, each mouthful left me going for more.
The Sambal Sotong was not rubbery, and was not too spicy. The Sambal Prawns on the other hand were, unfortunately, not as fresh as I would have liked them to be.
One of the best, if not the best curry rice in Singapore, Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice is something that you have to try at least once in your lifetime. Queues start to form very early, and the popular dishes do tend to sell out fast! So, come early to get your hands on a plate of messy goodness!
