Macpherson Bak Chor Mee – Hidden Gem in Toa Payoh!
October 24, 2018
Hidden in a little coffee shop in Toa Payoh, Macpherson Teochew Bak Chor Mee dishes out its signature Bak Chor Mee ($5.00), and Popular Macpherson Bak Chor Mee ($3.00), amongst other favourites, to loyal fans and hungry diners.
Many years ago, the stall was located at Jackson Market which was unfortunately demolished. The stall then moved into a coffeeshop behind Yishun Swimming Complex, before relocating to the current space.
I was pleasantly surprised by the huge portion of noodles. The Signature dish consists of nicely cooked noodles and tons of liao such as wontons, fuzhou meatballs, minced meat, liver, mushrooms, as well as bian yu. I certainly got my money’s worth!
The Macpherson Bak Chor Mee is slightly different from the signature bowl as it has lesser ingredients. Despite the difference, this dish is still pretty good! The Macpherson Bak Chor Mee dish is slightly more flavourful because it is tossed with more vinegar. For those who love their bak chor mee with more vinegar, this will suit your taste buds more.
After speaking to the stall owner, I found out that his wife makes the wantons and Fuzhou meatballs by hand. No wonder the Fuzhou meatballs tasted different from the ones I usually have! Besides the ball of meat found in the centre, I was greeted by a burst of soup when I first bit into the meatball. It’s like a “xiao long bao” meatball! Just the meatballs alone warrant a trip to the stall, really!
I had to take photos before trying the bak chor mee, so I was afraid that the wantons would be soggy and soft by the time I could taste it. To my surprise, the wantons held their crunch despite sitting on the warm noodles for a long while.
Despite moving so many times, Macpherson Bak Chor Mee still receives long queues and is ever so popular. If you love a good hearty bowl of bak chor mee, you need to make a trip here.
