Maki-San : Design Your Own Sushi & Salad
November 05, 2012
Many of you are probably Subway fans because you can customize your own sandwiches. And now, for the first time in Singapore, there is a place that lets you customize your very own sushi roll and Japanese-inspired salads.
Inspired by customized sushi restaurants in US – “How Do You Roll” and “U Sushi”, Maki-San (Facebook here) is a local custom sushi shop that is opened for only 2 months. At Maki-San, you have the freedom to pick each and every ingredients that goes into your sushi (or for that matter, salad) and watched it get hand-rolled or tossed right in front of you.
There is over 80 ingredients to customize your creation from, delightful Japanese mainstays, inspired Western additions, and local favourites.
Here’s my customized sushi which has cucumber, omelette, mushroom, chicken, salmon sashimi and steamed prawn, with teriyaki sauce and sprinkled with Bonito flakes. Very yummy!
Steps to customize your own Sushi:
1. Pick the Size (Little San $6.90 or Mega San $9.90)
2. Pick your Wrap (Traditional Seaweed or unusual Soy Sesame version for extra $1)
3. Pick your Rice (Classic Japanese White Rice or Unseasoned Brown Rice)
4. Pick you Stuffing (can be veggies and dairy product or go for the Specials such as Grilled Unagi, Salmon Sashimi, Teriyaki Chicken, Smoked Salmon etc)
5. Pick your Sprinkles (turkey bacon bits, chicken floss etc)
6. Pick your Homemade Sauces (Ponzu, Japanese Curry etc)
They also have Signature Sushi for people who is not in the mood for DIY. 3 Signature Sushi are California Dreaming ($8.90), Roast N’ Roll ($8.90) and Keep on Shrimpin’ ($9.90). We ordered Keep on Shrimpin’ which includes fried ebi and asparagus on healthy Soy with Sesame.
Every sushi is packed in any of the five unique packaging designs. Each box is like a unique pop art box and there are people who come here just to collect the boxes!
Maki-San also serves customized sushi. What differentiates them from other salad shops, is their emphasis on Japanese ingredients in a bowl of salad. Owners of Maki-San believe that there should have a balance in a bowl of salad, so you can have a bed of crispy greens as a base, topped with tempura, sesame seeds and drizzled with sweet and sour Yuzu Honey Homemade dressing.
There are 3 salad sizes in Maki-San – Little, Big and Mega San – and three pre-configured Signatures including “What’s your Beef?”, a flavourful mix of Japanese, Western and Thai influence.
On the wall of the restaurant, you can also see 3D pop ups on the wall that hint at crazy customizations.
Entering this shop makes me happy because of the colourful wall deco. I never knew Japanese food can get so fun!
