Mei Chin Fish Soup – A Hidden Gem in Tai Seng
February 04, 2021
Mei Chin Fish Soup is very well hidden in the midst of industrial warehouses that looks all the same. Despite its location, it draws consistent queues. Their patrons don’t only include workers from the surrounding warehouses. A bulk of them also comes from offices which are at least a 200m walk away from here. Sceptical me was wondering how good can a bowl of fish soup be. Well, I was astonished and impressed. THIS is how good a bowl of fish soup can be.
We got the regular Fish Soup ($5) and the Fish Porridge ($5). There is the option to add on a bowl of rice for $0.50. If you’re feeling hungry, roll with the $6 portion which has more ingredients! A unique feature of all the fish soup dishes here is that they are topped with fried egg floss.
First up, we had the signature fish soup. The soup was really clear, crystal clear in fact. Despite its clarity, it didn’t lack flavour at all. It was not only tasty but also so well balanced that I wondered how they achieve such depth with such a clear soup!
This fish soup is light and refreshing as well. A part of me foresees myself craving for it, especially on days when I feel a tad under the weather but want to have a good meal anyway.
The fish is the real star that impressed me to the core. It was so smooth to the point that I might just slurp it down my along with the soup if I’m not careful! I barely needed to chew it because it came apart nicely. As soft as it was, it was also firm, and not mushy at all — just like how a slice of fresh fish should be. Dip it into the chilli sauce for the perfect savoury combo!
The Fish Porridge, on the other hand, is not in the form of the sticky Teochew porridge. It resembles the trendy Pao Fan very much as it is just rice submerged in fish soup with egg floss toppings. I would say that this might be a very healthy pao fan, as it is lighter and not oily!
The fish porridge has a hidden addition of cai por(preserved radish) which makes the porridge more flavourful! The cai por added a mix of sweetness and saltiness to the soup. It kind of reminded me of old school porridge.
Another thing that I love about Mei Chin Fish Soup is how they give quite a generous portion of fish slices. The aunty makes you feel young as well because no matter how old you look, she’ll always address you as 小妹(little girl).
Do come early before they are sold out and be prepared to queue for at least 10 to 15 minutes! Bring an umbrella or a cap to shield yourself from the blazing sun for your walk here as there are no shelters along the way.
