It was a cold and rainy afternoon when I found myself craving a warm, comforting bowl of noodles. You know that kind of weather—where all you want is something hot, slurp-worthy, and deeply satisfying. That’s how I ended up at the newly opened Miss Tang’s Rice Noodles (唐大小姐小锅米线) at Funan, eager to dive into their authentic Yunnan-style mixian (米线).

Founder Helen Tang is a cycling enthusiast whom once embarked on a month-long journey from Chengdu to Tibet, where she met her life partner, Fang Jiao, during a mountain climb. Their travels took them to Mengzi, Yunnan, where they fell in love with the famous local dish: Crossing Bridge Rice Noodles.

Determined to bring a taste of Yunnan to Singapore, Helen spent a month in Mengzi, perfecting traditional cooking techniques. She opened her first outlet, Mademoiselle Tang Noodle, at Novena in 2018, and now, with her second outlet at Funan, even more people can experience her beloved Yunnan flavours.

With over 14 types of rice noodles and a selection of comforting mini pots, it was hard to decide where to begin. But since it was a rainy day (and we all know rainy days call for hearty bowls of noodles), I went all in.

Every bowl here is cooked in a small copper pot, just like how it’s done in China, to retain heat and enhance the natural flavors of the broth. The result? A deep, umami-rich broth made from pork and chicken bones, simmered for 8 hours with no additives—just pure goodness.

The first bowl to arrive was the Spicy Pickled Cabbage Rice Noodles ($7.90)—an affordable dish with bold flavours. The moment I tasted the broth, my senses woke up! The pickled cabbage added a tangy punch, balanced by a fiery kick from the chili oil. The noodles were soft and springy, absorbing the broth beautifully. I loved how the sour, spicy, and savory notes danced together—this bowl was bright, punchy, and absolutely addictive.

Next came the Wild Mushroom Chicken Soup Rice Noodles ($18.80)—a complete contrast to the first dish, but equally comforting. The moment the bowl arrived, I could already smell the deep, earthy fragrance of the mushrooms. The broth was light but packed with umami, and the tender chicken pieces added to the comforting, home-cooked feel of the dish.

Of course, I couldn’t leave without trying their Signature Crossing Bridge Rice Noodles ($15.90)—the dish that started it all. A huge bowl of steaming hot broth arrives at your table, accompanied by a beautifully arranged partitioned box of ingredients: thinly sliced meats, quail eggs, tofu skin, fresh greens, and more. Adding the ingredients into the piping hot broth. The broth is light yet flavourful, allowing the fresh ingredients to shine.

Since I was in the mood for something spicy and warming, I also got the Spicy Boiled Pork Slices Pot ($13.50)—and wow, this was exactly what I needed. The broth is rich, fiery, and numbing, with that signature mala kick that tingles your lips in the best way possible. The pork slices were tender, soaking up all the bold flavours of the broth. Every spoonful was pure comfort, and by the time I finished, I was sweating but oh-so-satisfied.

For those who prefer something a little less intense, there’s also the Braised Chicken Pot ($9.90) and the Pork Stomach Chicken Pot ($13.50)—both sound incredibly hearty and are now on my list for my next visit.

No meal is complete without something fried to balance out all that soupy goodness, so I ordered a few skewers ($3.80 for a bundle of 3). Some papular items include Chicken Feet, Mini Mantou, King Mushroom and Pork Belly.

Miss Tang’s Rice Noodles is a little slice of Yunnan in the heart of Funan, offering affordable, authentic bowls starting at just $7.90. Whether you want something spicy and bold like the Pickled Cabbage Rice Noodles, nourishing like the Wild Mushroom Chicken Soup, or fun and interactive like the Signature Crossing Bridge Rice Noodles, there’s a dish for every craving.
