Mookata – Traditional Thai BBQ along East Coast Road
October 05, 2013
I am a big fan of mookata buffet. When the boyfriend told me there is a mookata thai steamboat place in Katong area with super long queue every dinner, I have been asking him to bring me there. And we are finally there to try it out!
We ordered a set of 4 (because there were 2 other friends) and the set comes with a combination of marinated chicken (thigh), pork (collar), prawns, squid, suriyaki, streaky bacon, pork belly, fishball, meatball, crabsticks, otah fishcake, round cabbage, chinese cabbage, kang kong, xiao bai cai, corn, golden mushroom, eggs, tung hoon and tofu. The mookata price costs $ 68.90.
On top of that, we ordered an extra bowl of pork collar ($8)
We placed a fragrant morsel of lard on the top of the dome, then left to swathe the surface with a slick for grilling the meats and seafood. The blistered lardons are the highlight of Mookata.
The grilling begins. White charcoal (or “binchō-tan”) is used, which is able to cook ingredients thoroughly to a beautiful sear while retaining of the meat’s pure flavour. The well-marinated meats hiss and sizzle… yums…Especially the marbled pork collar, it roasts gently on the grill for that meltingly succulent texture. I like the marinade, it wins me with just a bite. And the size of each meat is decent, allowing us to enjoy it to the fullest.
We tried the pork soup which is quite tasty. The flavour of the soup intensifies with more grilling, as fresh slices of seafood – juicy squid, cockles, prawns and fish – cook quickly into sweet, succulent nibbles. When you eat mookata, remember to watch as the juices of the meat trickle delightfully into the ready trough of broth, love it! They have tom yum too, I am going to try it the next time I am here!
No meal can be complete without condiments, so must try their signature chilli sauce which comes in three different degrees of spiciness. I love the mid spicy one, which is sweet, garlicky and slightly spicy. Belly full of warmth!
Oh by the way, if you are going on weekends, go earlier for dinner to avoid the queue!
