Quarter, Quarter, Half – The Easy Way to Healthier, Balanced Meals!
April 01, 2021
Singapore is a food haven and maintaining a healthier diet sounds almost impossible. But really, I’ve come to learn that I don’t have to follow a strict diet or deprive myself in order to eat nutritious and delicious meals. Healthier, balanced meals are so easy with Quarter, Quarter, Half (QQH).
All I need to do is to plan my meals according to My Healthy Plate – Quarter, Quarter, Half; i.e. a Quarter plate of wholegrains, a Quarter plate of protein and Half a plate of fruit and vegetables. It’s straightforward, easy to follow and I can apply it for all my favourite foods! Now this is the type of diet plan that I can keep to!
You’ll be surprised to discover that a good number of eateries in Singapore offer various healthier choices such as wholegrain options and low-calorie meals, that will leave you spoilt for choice. Simply keep an eye out for those big, red Healthier Dining Programme (HDP) identifiers! Here are a few of my favourite places to visit for delicious, nutritious, healthier and balanced meals!
Greendot
Greendot has always been my go-to for healthy, feel-good meals. The Braised Tea Flower Mushroom and Fresh Tau Kwa Bento set not only ticked all the boxes of My Healthy Plate – Quarter, Quarter, Half, it was also yummy!
For the Quarter plate of protein, I got some Tau Kwa. The firm tofu complemented by the juicy mushrooms was dressed lightly in a savoury sauce. The delightful combo goes really well with my Quarter plate of hearty brown rice. For the Half plate of vegetables, I chose braised pumpkin and broccoli. The sweetness of the braised pumpkin provided a smooth and creamy texture that contrasted well with that of the savoury broccoli dish.
If you ever need a quick reminder on Quarter, Quarter, Half, just look out for the wall stickers and posters around Greendot outlets, island-wide!
Simply Wrapps
Always on-the-go? Pop by Simply Wrapps to get an entire meal all neatly wrapped up and ready to go — convenience at its finest! For someone like me who enjoys fresh flavours, the Mango Chicken Burrito was the ideal choice. Deliciously marinated with luscious mango, the creamy chicken was perfectly balanced out by the fresh greens and juicy tomatoes, along with some brown rice. So, there you go, a perfect Quarter, Quarter, Half meal with a Quarter plate of wholegrains made up by the brown rice and wholegrain tortilla, the delectable mango chicken as the Quarter plate of protein, and Half a plate of vegetables from the greens and tomatoes. Fuss-free, nutritious, and delicious!
Sakae Sushi
We all love our Japanese food and what’s even better is that the Health Promotion Board has partnered with Sakae Sushi to offer delicious, healthier options that are lower in calories!
To Quarter, Quarter, Half, I would recommend that you try the Unatama Don. Eel is a fish that is not only high in protein and minerals, but also contains good fats – Omega-3 which helps support heart health. The grilled river eel’s tender flesh had a subtle sweetness that was further enhanced by a savoury-sweet glaze and was the perfect Quarter plate of protein. The Unatama Don also came with a gorgeous, runny Onsen egg on a bed of warm, fluffy Japanese rice.
For the Half plate of fruit and vegetables, I asked for a side of Avocado Salad. I love avocado and the salad came laden with fresh, crunchy vegetables such as mesclun greens, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and corn. And of course, not forgetting the creamy, nutritious slices of avocado! The fresh Avocado Salad really added delightful flavour and colours to the meal.
Good things must share! So, if you are looking for variety and balanced meals, Sakae Sushi has many healthier options for you to share with your loved ones to Quarter, Quarter, Half together!
Prata Wala
Out of the large variety of yummy Northern and Southern Indian dishes available at Prata Wala, I went for the Tandoori Chicken Naan Set. You can opt for Prata Wala’s wholegrain naan and prata too! Having tried the regular non-wholegrain version, I think that the wholegrain ones taste just as good!
For the Quarter plate of protein, here’s the Tandoori Chicken that came with the wholegrain naan. The meat was spiced wonderfully and fork-tender, made even more delicious with a squeeze of lemon.
For the Half plate of vegetables, I ordered additional sides of Palak Paneer (pureed spinach with cottage cheese) and Jaipuri Mixed Vegetables. The creamy pureed spinach and scrumptious mixed vegetables perfectly complemented the crisp wholegrain naan. The cottage cheese in the Palak Paneer also provided a calcium-rich protein source as part of the Quarter plate of protein, in addition to the chicken.
Alternatively, you can always substitute the vegetables with fruit and end the meal on a refreshing note. Or if you are feeling full, make it up in the next meal! Enjoy a healthy snack of fruit or vegetables when you are next feeling peckish.
I am usually torn between a strict diet and wanting to enjoy all my favourite foods. With Quarter, Quarter, Half, my favourite meals can now be balanced, nutritious and fulfilling, so it’s much easier to control cravings!
