Nathan Congee and Noodle, Hong Kong
January 04, 2015
Just across the street from our hotel’s (Novotel Nathan Road Kowloon) main entrance is a nondescript eatery Nathan Congee and Noodle (彌敦粥麵家) which has been making great congee and noodles for the last half-century. They sell a huge variety of porridge.
We ordered their signature Jidi Porridge (scholar’s porridge) – a congee with pork liver, intestines, kidney. The name originated from Qing Dynasty, it was said that people who are going to have an important exam like to have a bowl of Jidi porridge, expecting to bring the good luck to the examination and pass the examination smoothly. The congee is smooth and satisfying with generous amount of innards. Love the pork liver especially which was cooked till perfection.
My favourite is the congee with chicken fillets. The tender chicken fillets has been marinated with hua diao jiu which gives it a nice aroma.
Order a side of fritters to be dunked into congee and eaten slightly soggy.
