NiuNiu Tea & DuDu Rice – Wide Variety of Korean-Taiwanese Street Food in a Hawker Stall
October 20, 2022
I first heard of NiuNiu Tea & DuDu Rice when they were still a home-based business. They have recently opened a hawker stall in Whampoa Food Centre.
Run by Ryan, who has Taiwanese parents and a Chinese-Korean wife, the stall boasts an extensive array of Korean-Taiwanese street food in a small hawker stall. Some dishes we tried include Lu Rou Fan, Oyster Mee Sua, Crispy Chicken Cutlet, Tteokbokki.
Mealtimes see long lines at this stall, with customers always ordering a staple bowl of braised pork rice. Their Braised Pork Rice features fatty layers of pork belly and lean meat stacked atop high quality pearl rice, a whole braised egg, and house-made kimchi. The pork is left to simmer to develop its flavours. For only $4.70, it is a delicious bowl that leaves a sticky feeling on the lips. The luscious sauce coated each pearl of rice evenly, making each mouthful really aromatic.
Besides the signature braised pork rice, their Taiwanese Mee Sua with shredded chicken and oyster is also a hot favourite. The silky rice vermicelli is soaked in a bonito-based stock, and well seasoned with vinegar, chilli and coriander. I like that the oysters are plump and you can enjoy it in one mouthful.
To pair with the braised pork rice and mee sua, you can get a side of Taiwanese Crispy Chicken Cutlet and Spiced Crispy Chicken Skin. The chicken skin is available in limited quantity daily so it sells out very quickly.
Besides delicious Taiwanese dishes, there are some Korean street snacks you can try too. My friends love the QQ Cheesy Tteokbokki ($3.30) where the richness of the cheese went really with the chewiness of the rice cakes. The sauce was spicy and creamy — very addictive! Order in advance if you wish to try their Kimbap ($4.50).
