Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat

Hailed as one of the oldest fish head steamboat restaurants in Singapore, Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head Steamboat prepares bubbling hotpots of soup brimming with fresh fish and a bounty of ingredients, all cooked using ember charcoal right at your table. 

One of our favourites is the Grouper Fishboat, and the broth, following an original recipe dating back to 1927, was light on the palate yet full of flavour and warms you down to the bone. The firm flesh of the grouper fish had a delicately sweet taste which elevated the feeling of home-cooked goodness; pair it with their sides of chilli for an even better taste. We also loved the fried yam sticks among all the other ingredients in the hotpot, and not forgetting the addition of ti poh (dried sole fish) in the broth! Another must-try is the Signature Pork Belly, that is well-marinated with their in-house fermented tofu recipe.

With humble beginnings of offering kampung-style seafood on the shores of Pulau Ubin, New Ubin Seafood has flourished and serves a wide array of zi char dishes and their own renditions of Singaporean favourites. 

Excite your senses with their Tequila Infused Chicken in Claypot, cooked in a medley of herbs and tequila that gets burned off in a flambe right before your eyes! Crabs are an absolute must-have – their Live Mud Crab can be cooked in 11 different ways, including Black Pepper, Garlic Baked, Salted Egg and Bee Hoon Soup. Our top recommendation, however, is the Classic Chilli Crab that comes with a copious amount of that decadent spicy-sweet gravy. Be sure to mop up every last bit with the Deep-Fried Mantous! For dessert, check out their take on kaya toast with the Fresh Kaya on Toasted Baguette, which comes served with French butter and homemade kaya.

Wan He Lou

When Wan He Lou is mentioned, their famed Signature Lobster Porridge is the first thing that comes to mind. What started out as a coincidental creation by Chef Lau Siaw Dee on a diving trip has been further refined into an award-winning comfort dish. Cooked in a Teochew style, the rich soup is dyed a gorgeous golden hue from the lobster roe, and each slurp yields an umami-filled fragrance. The enormous lobster is difficult to miss; once you dig into its springy flesh, you would have entered foodie heaven. 

Another culinary masterpiece that won us over is the Wild Caught Colossal Tiger Prawn in Hawthorne Sauce. The hulking crustaceans are super-duper juicy and fresh, bathed in an irresistibly savoury sauce.
