If you love all things pandan, you will love the rice at this nasi lemak stall. Their nasi is cooked with freshly squeezed pandan juice. I could smell the fragrance of the pandan even through my mask when I got my food.

The friendly couple behind this humble stall is Uncle Thomas and Auntie Alice. They’ve been in the hood for the past 30 years, waking up daily in the wee hours of the morning to prepare the ingredients needed. Uncle Thomas is in charge of cooking the ingredients and ensuring that there’s enough to go around while Auntie Alice attends to customers.

They have two nasi lemak sets — $3 and $4. The difference lies in the number of ingredients. The $3 set has four items : fish cake, fried fish fillet, luncheon meat and chicken, while the $4 portion has three more items on top : a sunny side up, otah, a kuning fish, and a little more rice. If you’re not a fan of sets, you can pick your ingredients caifan style too!

What I love most about this nasi lemak is that the rice is super lemak (richly flavoured)! It was much more flavourful than usual and there was a strong pandan aftertaste in every bite. There was a slight sweetness from the coconut milk as well. Other than the sweet rice, everything else was savoury.

You can choose between a drumstick or a chicken wing for your meal. The chicken had a very crispy skin, but I think that the meat was a little tough. The chicken was seasoned with salt, sugar, pepper and some spices that Uncle Thomas kept mum about. It is then marinated overnight. The chicken was indeed flavourful, especially when you eat just the batter and skin. pandan leaf nasi lemak-12

The fried fish fillet was so good! It was crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. They have a very unique fish cake as well. Instead of the one with a yellow layer on the outside that we are familiar with, the one here looks like a flat piece of white otah.

The tuning fish deserves a special mention! I don’t like eating this fish, but I found it quite enjoyable in this nasi lemak set. It was not too fried and it was surprisingly easy to debone as well. It’s also slightly larger than the usual kuning fish that other nasi lemak stalls offer.

The other ingredients were quite standard. The sunshine egg (as Uncle Thomas calls it) and the otah were nothing out of the norm. Don’t expect a runny egg yolk, though it may look like there will be one.

By the end of the meal, I was left quite thirsty because of the salty and savoury food. I was glad that I had my kopi peng from Equate Coffee that’s just a block away from the hawker centre. I would recommend catching them early as they open at 6 am, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a queue then! The stall will close once they are sold out.
