Looking for a delicious spread of classic Penang dishes? Penang Savour is one eatery you have to visit. Located just a stone’s throw away from Ang Mo Kio MRT, Penang Savour offers a variety of dishes and sides cooked up by Malaysian chefs who are eager to share a taste of home with patrons.

The small, air-conditioned eatery offers a brief respite from the heat, and the warm and welcoming decor, and familiar-looking murals will whisk you away to the streets of Penang. Given its prime location, be sure to arrive in time to beat the lunch crowd!

A must-try is the Penang Laksa ($4.50). This piping hot bowl of assam(tamarind) broth comes topped with ingredients such as sliced onions, ikan kembung (chub mackerel), pineapple, and fresh mint leaves.

Robust with a great punch of lingering spiciness, the assam broth wasn’t overly fishy, nor was it too tangy. It had the right balance of flavours, and it had me hooked from the very first spoonful.

The slippery and firm white rice noodles were especially easy to slurp up with the soup! To me, a good bowl of Penang laksa is able to successfully highlight and bring together the flavours of every ingredient present in the bowl. And, I’m happy to report that Penang Savour’s version was on point. I really liked how the bits of ikan kembung adequately absorbed the broth, while still retaining its own flavour. Portion-wise, I wished there was more.

The Penang Prawn Mee ($5) was quite the aromatic dish, and was packed with de-shelled prawns, meat, greens, half a boiled egg, a sprinkling of pork lard, and a mix of yellow noodles and bee hoon.

You can distinctly taste the umami of prawns in the broth, along with sweet undertones. While it wasn’t as rich as other prawn noodles I’ve had, it was still satisfying. The prawns were on the smaller side and were slightly overcooked.

Coming in with quite the colour contrast, after its vibrantly-coloured “sister dishes”, the Penang Kway Teow Soup ($4) was a refreshing change of pace. The soup was on the lighter side but was in no way bland.

The smooth kway teow was slightly firm, as were the slices of fishcake. The same couldn’t be said for the fishballs, however. The latter weren’t as springy and seasoned as I would have liked them to be, but there’s nothing chilli sauce can’t solve in terms of taste, so I’d recommend adding some to your bowl.

In true Penang style, wrap up your meal with a bowl of Penang Chendol ($2.50), complete with green rice flour jelly and red azuki beans. This icy concoction had a good mix of coconut milk and gula melaka (palm sugar), but I thought they could be a little more heavy handed with the coconut milk.

I was initially looking forward to trying their Penang Fried Kway Teow ($5) but it was mercilessly tagged with a “coming soon” sign on the menu. Thankfully, it looks like we won’t have to wait for long as I was told they would finally be available sometime next week! Penang Savour’s fairly central location and affordable price points definitely render them a good stop for a decent meal.
